It seems I may have a problem with my brake booster. Wondering the best way to go about fixing/replacing it. Anybody know where to buy a rebuilt unit?

Looks like this:

Thanks,
Dave

That would be Booster Dewey and yes he's the one to use.

They are being reproduced now. I have not heard any feedback yet on fit/quality etc.
Seller has different prices on his site and his ebay listing.

Thanks; exactly what I was looking for. I may be the guinea pig on this one.

....a local shop claims they can rebuild mine, so I'm going to talk to them first.

Thanks again.

The repro unit is close but not an exact match for the back half of the unit. If you are not too concerned about originality, this might be the best bet for you if you are looking for NEW piece.

Last one I had built by Booster Dewey I think it was under $200 done .

IMO, it's a no brainer.

IF ,,,,,, I didn't already have a core to have built I might look harder at the repop

Thanks all;

Bill, I'd probably do the rebuild thing but althought the price sounds good, shipping to and from the US with the associated delays dampens my enthusiasm for that particular solution.

PLUS, I'm not 100% sure I have the correct booster in the first place! I see that MBM Brakes (where Pirate Jack gets his from) shows two different boosters that appear identical in the pictures on the site;

- PB8536-1 which says it's for a '66 - '69 B body

- PB8536-2 which says it's for a '70 - '74 B and E body.

Anyone know what the differences between the two OEM parts are? If I knew that, I could eliminate having the wrong booster as part of my issue...

...and now that I'm poking around on their site, I notice that they appear to show the wrong "power brake reinforcement plate" for 1970 as well so I'm not sure how correct their stuff is likely to be...

You should be able to go to Napa and they will send it out to have it rebuilt. I sent my original 70 Challenger booster out a few months ago. Took about 2 weeks and cost $100. You may want to go that route instead of buying a new one.

OK, I called Pirate Jack (MBM won't accept my queries as I'm not a dealer). I explained that the catalog data is incorrect as it relates to the power brake firewall re-inforcement plate and that my '70 b-body uses the one that they show as correct for a '66 - '69. He confirmed there was an error in the catalog and said the booster for the '66 - '69 is correct for my '70 (which makes sense that the application should be '66 - '70 b body vs. '71-'74 B and E which share the same firewall).

Basically he said I would know if I had the wrong booster because the E body (and I presume '71 and up B body) has a different spacing on the firewall mounting bolts. Can anyone confirm this?

...he didn't know if the "Pedal bracket swivel" (bellcrank) was the same or not between the two applications.

I also handle the MBM repro Bendix boosters.

The '70 and earlier B-body unit will interchange with OEM under-dash linkage, but you must enlarge the hole in the stock firewall stiffening plate.

The E-body/'71-up B-body version was never available from the factory. It has a different bolt pattern on the back and a longer input rod. It won't interchange with OEM under-dash linkage, so you must buy the MBM linkage.

I'm also working on B and E body "Hemi" (under-hood) linkage for this booster.

As stated you will have to enlarge the plate holes, but I have used the repo & it works perfectly!

Good to know that you carry the stuff (MBM's website only lists Pirate Jack). If I need one, I'll definitely get it from you.

OK, so what Pirate Jack's told me was that they would need to sell me the Booster Conversion Kit BCK8536-1 (for '66 - '69 cars)and then delete the master cylinder (which is just as well because it appears to be a Hemi style cylinder with the line connections on the fender side). The guy didn't know if the bellcrank linkage was the same or different between the -1 and -2 kits.

....going back to my notes when I put the car together a few years ago, Mike G. (Dayclona) gave me a bunch of measurements and one of his comments was "...IIRC the 68/69 (linkage) is the same, and the 70 is slightly different in pivot locations/angles/geometry, hence the different bellcranks..."

I ended up having to space the booster away from the firewall plate to get enough clearance to hook up the linkage to the pedal without having the brakes partially depressed while the pedal is in the fully up position so I strongly suspect that something is wrong. The pedal assy is PROBABLY original, but who knows for sure.

...my god what a PITA! I've probably taken the linkage on and off a dozen times now!

Sooo; is the hole size difference the reason these kits come with a new firewall plate?

not sure exactly what you mean when you say the E body and '71 and up B body "was never available from the factory"

I suppose the safest thing to do to make sure everything works is to buy the entire BCK8536-1 kit c/w firewall plate, linkage kit, booster and master cylinder....I wonder if the correct master is available?

Thanks

Dave

The special version of the Bendix dual diaphragm booster with under-hood linkage was only available on Hemi cars.

E-bodies and '71 and newer B-bodies were never produced with a a Bendix booster that bolted directly to the firewall (under-dash linkage).
