My pushbutton 727 is leaking where the shifter cable enters the housing. I can see it weeping through the threads of the adjuster wheel. Have any of you had experience with fixing this type of leak? Thanks in advance.

Hi Sam, thanks for the help. Is the o-ring on the tip of the cable that goes into the barrel, or is it someplace else? I don't have the pan down yet so I'm trying to visualize it. I'll probably see it right away when I drop the pan.

Here's a closeup of the cable housing end, the O ring dimensions are .500" ID X .100" thick.

They also leak right through the cable. ES-3 shrink tube that has glue in it seals it for good. I have my first leak free push button ever. The park cable is the same way. If you can't find some, PM me I've got it.

Yup. It's available in varying sizes. I believe I used MS-3 or -4 I'll check what I have.

The pan doesn't have to be removed, the clip can be accessed with a flat blade screwdriver through the hole the cable goes in. I can post the instructions from the factory service manual if you need them, just don't remember which side the clip is on off the top of my head, been a couple years since I worked on mine.

Hi G Bob,

I typically pull the pan whenever I disconnect the shift cable in case I have to readjust the cable. That way you can watch the valve body as the buttons are pushed to know if you've got it adjusted dead-on.

My son came up with an easy way on his 62. Disconnect the cable at the shifter. M Put the shifter in reverse, then pull the cable into reverse and see if it slips on the pin. Then depress the bottom button, be it 1st or 3rd according to your valve body. If it doesn't slip on the pin adjust at the trans as necessary, no mess.

I was just saying you don't HAVE to drop the pan to access the clip to release the cable. Which was stated by another poster. I've only done it once, when I put my 64 together (using a 65 slip-yoke trans). So I'm no authority, but I followed the instructions in the FSM and got it installed and adjusted with no issues.

Thanks everyone. The o-ring did the trick. I also used a small amount of rubber gasket adhesive in the channel where the o-ring sits. I filled the trans last night and let it sit. Checked it this morning, no more leak.

Good ol' Moparts to the rescue!
