The pan doesn't have to be removed, the clip can be accessed with a flat blade screwdriver through the hole the cable goes in. I can post the instructions from the factory service manual if you need them, just don't remember which side the clip is on off the top of my head, been a couple years since I worked on mine.

I was just saying you don't HAVE to drop the pan to access the clip to release the cable. Which was stated by another poster. I've only done it once, when I put my 64 together (using a 65 slip-yoke trans). So I'm no authority, but I followed the instructions in the FSM and got it installed and adjusted with no issues.
