Well, I'm still chasing a very stubborn oil leak from the timing chain cover area. This latest round I picked up a new cover and went to install it tonight until I found a substantial amount of this caked up in the fuel pump eccentric:
A magnet will pick it up. Is this something I should be concerned about?
Thanks...

NO that's not normally found in ANY healthy engine.Flat tappet cam?
Yeah, Comp XE-274 with Edelbrock heads.
Ummm...I'd be concerned. Do you have a magnetic drain plug? Pull it and look.

I do. This is really making me worried. Guess I'll drain the oil and cut the filter open in the morning.
sounds like a good plan.

I'd suggest a thorough visual in the timing chain area & if good there then pull the valve covers. keep going till you find out where the problem is at that is producing the shavings. Holler how it goes. You very well might need to tear it down & clean everything then go back together with that amount of metal showing but first find the problem. EDIT see if the timing cover flat shows signs of the eccectric rubbing on it. A stackup of tolerances can put em together. A thicker gasket will solve it

Well, a bit of an update. I cut the filter open, fished a magnet through the pan, popped the valve covers, and didn't find anything. It beats the hell out of me. There was no out of the ordinary noise coming from the valve train prior to pulling the cover off either. The backside of the original timing cover looks to be in good shape as well.

Is there an oil slinger on the crank? That fuel pump eccentric needs a good supply of oil thrown onto it to keep the fuel pump arm from eating it.
I love the smell of Deer guts in the morning, it smells like... VICTORY!
