My brother wants to have his 77 dodge 4x4 painted like a 77-79 power wagon like on the old show Simon and Simon. trying to tell him it aint going to be cheap. says he doesn't want it perfect just those colors.he thinks just un bolt the bed and blast and paint and take off fenders etc. trying to tell him that a shop would have $2-3k in materials. what do you guys think?? Ah brotherly love.

See if he can retrieve the condensed version of that mile long do it yourself painting thread that pops back up on occaision. I think it took next to nothing in materials & was unique how they did it & with a bit of practice would come out better than what a pro shop would do & WAY cheaper.

Imo. the durability is not there that's needed on a car or truck.
I've used oil based paint on a work truck. Not all sanded and buffed, just on the bed, flat bed with boxes on the side.
It was a huge mistake and I wasted a lot of prep time(I sand blasted the bed bare) only to have it never to harden up until like 3 years later. It looked like crap new and I will never use oil based paint on a car or truck again. Not on one that I care about.
A wrap would be the best deal for the OP imo. Vinyl wrap.

Maybe a roller paint job is all the OP brother wants? I'm just saying it will never be as hard as a enamel or 2 stage paint job and won't hold up like one. Here's pictures of the truck that I was talking about. I generally won't speak up unless I have first hand experience. I won't give advise on what I read or what other people said. Only from my first hand experience.   As you can see, there was a lot of prep and boxes to paint. Every truck you see in the background I painted and lettered myself. I have 14 of them. Been there... It was such a misable out come I didn't even take pictures when we were done. I painted this one when it was brand new with enamel and a spray gun. It lasted 10 years until it got repainted. Never again with oil based paint. I used SW industrial enamel, heavy duty paint when we rolled it.

Well, a MAACO job will run $300 and up, a decent paint job will run $2000 and up.
I can't see $2000 worth of materials, but $500 for materials is a better ballpark figure, still not cheap.
My corvette restorer friends tell me you can't get a decent paint job for $10,000!
I have painted two cars and a cousin painted one, all three in garages or barns. We weren't pros, and it showed. HELLO, ORANGE PEEL!
We had decent equipment, guns were Binks, for example, but clearly didn't know how to apply a coating. It took me a month to cut down most of the excessive bumpiness on one car, one car went to its grave with considerable orange peel.
So, I say it may seem easy but it's not. It's an art. And the prep is labor-intensive with no real way of making it easier.
In the long run, you get what you pay for. If your cousin wants a custom job, I guess he'll end up with about $3000 in it. Is it worth that to him?

here's what Maaco just did for me for $300. Not sure how long it will last (plus it's up for sale  ) but it sure gets alot of oohs & ahhs everywhere I go

Like you Challenger1 I don't really comment much, mostly read and enjoy; you guys that frequently answer questions do such an awesome job  : but to say that with a little practice someone with no experience can do a better job than a professional shop is beyond ridiculous. There are cheaper ways of getting some paint on your vehicle though. I can't begin to tell all the crap that I have had to redo and fix because someone that thought they could do better than a professional screwed up. Maybe it hit me wrong;   rant off, I'll wait to read these until I have had my coffee from now on.

The key to making a MAACO paint job come out well is to do the prep work yourself. They dont put much sanding effort before they paint. More of a scuff job with scotchbrite is all..

did mine myself in the back yard in march here in FL turn out good for my first one.
used a gallon of 2k primer,1 gallon base,1 gallon clear,all black is done in 1 gallon goss black rustolium.
less than 500$ in supplys doing the labor my self in the yard.
i would love a S&S truck, I did me a 88 D-100 superbee truck, because it is about a close as I will get to owning a real 68 superbee. 
one thing for sure i did learn real fast... the word "JUST" in the phrase 'just paint it'. is a gollywopper of a word when it come down to painting it right.
