Thinking of using my 72 to eventually tow my 67 valiant to and from the track when the time gets here. The 72 is a 318 a833od 8 3/4 sure grip. Has tri y headers and a 4bbl.

Eventually it's getting a 360 with flat top pistons, and some minor tweaks.

If I would put 3/4t springs, would the truck be able to pull the valiant on an open trailer safely?

You can pull it as is but I don't believe that trans is good for towing a trailer. What gr ratio?

I'd want disk brakes on the front wheels. I think some of the 72's had drum brakes.

Trailer brakes would be a very good idea. Around here I believe trailer brakes are required on trailers weighing more than 3,000 lbs.

I agree on the transmission not being the best for towing. It may work ok on reasonably flat land. Starting off on a steep hill when towing the car & trailer could be a problem, especially if the truck has 3.23 gears.

I've towed with my 81 swb things that I shouldn't of..........but it will do the job. 318/4bbl 833OD with 3.55's and 2.76's........is it optimal or better stuff out there.........sure.

I would probably put at least 3.55's and do the disk brake up front and trailer brakes.

I've seen people pull with about everything........just be safe.

I've also up graded my RC with 1 ton(heavy 3/4 ton in my opinion)for light towing....some people disagree with my build, but it's what I had laying around and I used it. Again you need to be safe for you and other people on the road.

I think that your truck will do fine with you car and an open trailer, just do you homework on making it safer.

Already swapped to front disc brakes. Not sure of the rear ratio. I can put the 3 speed back in, but it needs a reseal. That and the 318 screams at 65.

So if I'm reading right:

Front discs. Check
Brake controller. Any recommendations?
3/4t springs would be a big help

Any other ideas? I am going to need to use the truck soon to bring the car home. So that should give me an idea

Pull in third gear (1:1 in the 833od). Don't get too wrapped up in the common misconception around here saying the 833od can't take it: If they can live behind a 650 hp six pack stroked big block in a 4000 pound B-body ( a certain '69 SuperBee that I know of ) they can survive in your application. The 833od I'm running now in my beater had a past life pulling a "big" holiday trailer according to the previous owner. Big enough I'm sure because the bolt-on hitch the Old Fart used bent the rear bumper from whatever it was he towing. Nothing wrong with it at 80,000 miles other than the clutch is weak from being improperly adjusted.

I doubt you need to fuss around with changing springs in your truck either. Move the car further back on the car hauler and get the weight over the trailer wheels where it belongs, the way a car is supposed to be loaded on a trailer.

Happy trails!

Here's aother way to look at it. If they were good for towing why weren't they in 3/4-1ton trucks
