70 B body, adjusting the passenger side door after rebuilding the door hinges. Problem has to do with latching/unlatching. I can get the door properly adjusted but having problems with the striker (doors were never really adjusted well so trying to get everything correct after the hinge work).

if i close the door with a light touch it wont latch fully. It won't open but it's not fully closed, The star wheel will get one click and that's it. If I almost slam the door the door will latch full but it won't open. You need to throw your shoulder into it to open. If I very slowly close the door I can fell both clicks from the star wheel but it still is very hard to open. the white plastic slider on the door latch seems to be working properly.

The door always opened well before rebuilding the hinges just never closed right. Any thoughts on why it is hard to open? i tried moving the striker out but that prevents the door from closing fully. Planning to get out tonight and troubleshoot but was looking for some ideas first.

check the screw holes that hold the latch in the door for fatigue cracks......make sure the screws are tight......adjust the door so it lines up nice without a striker, then install the striker to meet the door.........you may also have to shim the striker out to "reach" the latch properly

It is amazing how the slightest misalignment can result in this.
The 5 bolts that hold the door to the hinge allow a lot of articulation. Imagine how a fraction of an inch at the hinge affects the far end of the door. Try removing the door jamb latch and close the door fully. If the body lines up right, you'll need to work with the latch assemble more. If the body does NOT line up, it may be a matter of adjusting the door itself.

I can get the door to line up with the striker out and close all the way. Once I reinstal the striker is when I have problems. Original weatherstrip, no fatigue cracks, all metal is good. It's wierd because the latch worked fine before rebuilding the hinges, only problem was you had to lift up on the door to latch. But it closed and opened fine. Seems like the location of the striker is pulling the door too tight for the latch to release? But if I move the striker out then the door sits out too far.
