I am having a clearance problem with a set of Harold Johnsons Shorty headers on a 64 A-Body. I am thinking about deleting the oil filter as the car only runs about 150 miles each year at the drag strip. I am told that Offenhouser (not sure about spelling) used to sell a delete plate and plug for the side of the block. My worry is that I might be doing something goofy and cause an oil flow problem. I would appreciate any feed back especially from someone who's done this. I also plan to run a magnetic drain plug to collect metals. Thanks in advance.

I would look at a remote oil filter set up before I would delete it all together. I put 90* fittings and run lines to a filter on my Demon.

Aside from whether it is a good move or not to do it you'd want to plug all three ports (1 will already have a NPT plug) then from the oil sending unit hole in the top of the block drive the cup down & out of the #5 main bearing saddle after removeing the oil pump/#5 main cap. Now the oil will go straight up from the #5 cap then make a right turn into the pass (main) horizontle oiling gallery without being diverted sideways out to/from the filter.

when this is forgot it has a low oil psi if any psi at all.

so this is how it is done to delete the oil filtering.

dont see why it would be a problem.with that low of run time/milage often oil changes would be all thats needed.

no filters on 50s & 60s engines till the add on filters came along and then incorperated into the block itself.

no different from adding a 90* adaptor or a remote filter system.

the gallery plug is all the seperates it.

I would still thred/plug the oil passages on the outside of the block where the filter plate is missing.

Remember that those old engines had babbit (soft)bearings which could accomodate debris in the oil and the engines had 7:1 compression ratios and ran at 3600-4000 rpm.

Bad Idea.

56 I believe almost all came with filters.Last car I worked on without a filter was a 55.Every one after that had a filter. Most were the cartridge type that sat in a canister. My 57 Chrysler was a real pain.I went to a spin on with adapter from Hot Heads.Rocky
