Well i hav seen so many post here about flat cams that I felt complelled or maybe driven to ad this one. Thought sure I would dodge this pitfall cuz the cam was prevoiusly run in however I had to change lifters cuz they got rusty waiting on me to reassemble the engine. Now that it runs my rockers go out of adjustment quickly, intakes loose and exhaust too tight The oil always looks clean untill I poke a finger into one of those low spots that always hold oil, now I see metalic flakes Bummer
Sooo now the billion dollar question is ther any way short of a complete rebuild to save this mess
Really wasnt lookin forward to going bac to the machine shop a layin out another 2 thou for a second rebuild.

You tossed the rusted lifters when you finally ended up going together

I've done it. I'd like to have a heated garage so that condensation wouldn't be an issue every winter. All I need is a winning lottery ticket or marry a wealthy woman or come up with a better idea on how to cook fried chicken than the colonel has or even better stop procrastinating on my projects . No idea yet where the flakes are coming from? or why the rockers won't hold an adjustment. If you corrected the issue you could dissassemble & clean everything up & go back together & maybe not have a horrendous bill.

When I wiped out the cam on my 360, the metal particles got to the bearings and oil pump
Anyhow, I ended up with just re-hone the cylinders, and new rings, bearings, gaskets, and the new cam and lifters.

Before you get crazy, check your valve spring shims. If the stuff is aluminum flakes, good chance its the shims, unless they are the good correct hardened cups/shims. Both my heads do this , makes me want to kick the machineists in the nuts.

I made the same mistake. I put an old cam with new lifters and wiped out two lobes. Take her apart and clean it up. Gaskets, rings, bearings and the works. You should not need new pistons. Just get all the metal out of the shirts if it has any embedded it them.

i got some bad lifters in my kit from Comp. the pistions in side the lifter bodys are two tight. i have taken four apart and honed them trying to save the lifter boby because it's broke in to the cam. i still have one ticking. i think i am going to take it back out and work it again. i called Comp. they said take out the cam and lifters and send them to them if that was the problem they would replace them. thats great except i don't want to take it apart again. i ask about putting new lifters in and they said 50% chance that they would break in. there is a clear differance in the lifters they are using now and a year ago. i feel like if i wanted a 100.00 cam and lifters i would have bought a cheap kit. but the new Comp lifters looks like the cheap lifters.

Remcharger does th aluminum flakes cause the same problems as wiped lobes ?
I really think the cam is gone cuz the lash adjusment loosens up quickly on intakes exhausts seem to git tighter
I will lookin at the lifters soon, that tell most of the rest story.

lobes go fast. once it goes through the surface hardening then its soft metal. if you don't have a dail indcator to check the lift. have some one crank it while you watch the rockers. it's easy to see if a lobe is gone compared to one next to it.

Cut open the oil filter with a pair of tin-snips. If the shavings are on the motor, you'll find them in there.
