I'm on my way to the dump to get rid of some trash, and about 10 miles from home I hear the rear making noise. Sounds like bearings. Well I turned around and limped it home. Every now and then it would grumble loud and start to grab. I would tap the brakes and it would settle down some. Even locked up once. Backed it up and it let go. Got it home and opened it up. WOW completely dry and only 7 rollers fell out.
I have an 84 and I think the rears should swap out no problem. I could find the leaks and fix this one but the 84 doesn't leak, has better gears, and a fresh brakes. It just seems easier. Let me know if I'm out in left field.

You should of fixed the leaks and kept the rear full. Cant blame the truck but you can blame the operator.

I would cut the bearings off, are the threads ok? If so polish the spindle, check the seal surface and if all looks ok replace the bearings and seals. Check the other side, replace all the seals, reseal the cover and fill it full and run it.

I don't recall blaming the truck.
I was just surprised how far it went, and glad it made it home.

Cut what bearings off? There is just pieces of the cages left.
I am going to swap out to the better geared 84 rear.
thanx for your advice or criticism or what ever that was.

Sh-it happens! You do what ever you think is best for you, and your truck. I always say "I'm for what ever's easiest"! But get it back on the road safe.
You do appear to have the inner part of the bearing there, under the cage part. You'll have to cut that off.

It's a perfect candidate for narrowing and putting under a Valiant!

You realize it's a full floater. right? But you can have it, I have another to throw in.
Just to clarify some, this truck is a rusted piece of scrap metal on wheels. Bought 7 years ago for 350 dollars. It don't owe me a thing and I sure wasn't too concerned on it's well being. Still gonna run it. I am collecting body parts though. Bought a solid, full cab from a member here and a really nice front clip locally. It may have a second life yet. Not sure yet as I also have a 78 1/2 ton that needs a body. I would rather stay with a 70's body on that one though.

and the new front clip.

Assuming it's a D60 that's what's happening now. Cut off the ends weld on some passcar ends and voila! Ready for axles with flanges.

AZ is too far away to come get it. Just an idea.

Well, the thing is, I'm going to use my 80's axle. The 76 axle has studs and nuts, not bolts. I will pull a couple bolts and see what you need. It should be available at any hard ware store, shouldn't it? You sure can have the backing plates though. I'll leave it to you to find out if the 76 plate will fit your 80 truck. Maybe some one here can tell us.

As for the "you can have it" crack about the axle housing for shortening, I was just kidding. I didn't figure these would ship well.

Been awhile between the rain just after it happened and working through the hot weather. I finally got that 84 rear put under the truck.
The newer rear is a dream compared to the deep gear set on the old one. Now it just rolls along at a very comfortable rpm at 55 mph compared to the way it screamed for another gear with the old set.
So to sum up I replaced the shocks and u-bolts and re-used the backing plates complete with the new wheel cylinders, brake lines, and 3" brake shoes I installed two years ago.

any body need a rear to shorten?

That looks like a dana 60HD or semi HD on the pallet. Do you have another picture straight down from the top showing the center section? Some of the dana 60HD rear axle will accept 1.5" 35 spline shafts versus 1.3ish? 30 spline on a regular dana 60 truck rear.

Did it have 5/8 wheel studs? Does the new one have 1/2?

Is the truck a Camper 9000 or 7500?

I'm curious of what the ratio was between them? I'm glad that you got it back going again.

Had to get a Hybrid universal. part# 240-0369 The guy behind the counter said it was a discontinued part but there was one on the shelf a couple towns down the road and he had it there for me the same day. Car Quest has always been good to me.

Thanx, me too. Gonna have to remove the cover and give it a spin. Then check the one I installed. I can tell you the old one was tree stump pulling low. The difference is night and day. Today is family day so I should get to it tomorrow. I need to go to the dump and empty the darn thing.

Looks like the semi-hd so probably the big axles will not fit without boring the spindles.

Not really the axle to shorten and put into a car because the center will look different for the purist.

That bearing is trash. But the spindle looks okay from a glance. Just curious if the spindle got damaged?

I am sure the spindle could be cleaned up, just gotta be careful cutting the bearing races off.
Gonna take the cover tomorrow and check the ratios on both.
Sure goes down the road nice and the terrible grumbling I though was in the trans or throw out bearing is gone too.
I have no further use for it, so I guess I will try to get a couple bucks locally, otherwise it goes in the scrap pile.
