Bought a 74 Gold Duster saturday that has had one of these early rears installed by the previous owner I know the housing and axles are scrap but will the center section interchange to my later b body housing? I didn't notice it had this rear in it until it was on the rollback and really didn't think to look because I've never seen one in person, I guess the same po installed the traction bars and massive shackles Those are leaving with the rear as soon as monsoon season is over.

It'll bolt in.. dont know which one you have but if
you get the last 3 numbers off it we would know more..
but the alum center is based on the straight 1 3/4
pinion which is the old one

I'll try to get some numbers off it tomorrow. So if I have a set of later axles, if they are the same length, I can slide them in this housing?

I thought you had to change the ends of the axle tubes when changing from a tapered/keyed axle to the 65 and later flanged style?

Anyone that raced the old stuff with the tappered
axles got rid of them... when I raced my 62 out
on Woodward YEARS ago I had a pile of keys in the
glove box.. if it hooked good they sheared off...
I finally put a newer B-body 8 3/4 in it

So it would be better to drop the center out of this rear and put it in my later housing with it's axles?

Heavy cars and/or overpowered cars with sticky tires need the beef of the best 8%3/4 parts or the Dana 60. In my case the easiest and cheapest solution was to narrow a Dana 60, buy new 30 spline axles, use Mopar ends and 10" brakes. If you build a lighter car and don't abuse it a 8&3/4 will last just fine.

My 8 3/4 in my Valiant has lasted just fine with 18lbs of boost so I think an 8 3/4 will be ok in this one. I'm just looking to get the car on the road as easy as possible, so hopefully I can just drop this center out and put in my later housing. I have housings but only this center to use.

Somebody installing a 8.75 pre 65 tapered housing into a 74 for racing is rather strange IMO in the first place, any other surprises?

Not so far other then it being stripped out to start building a drag car. Luckly he kept and labeled all the interior pieces. This is a numbers car minus the rearend, but whats weird is it has a flat mount k member in it

There are several different widths of the early B and C body tapered axle rear ends, measure across the back side of rear end from the bearing flange to the other bearing flange and post that on here, maybe we can I.D. which width rear end it is. I took a 1964 B body rear end housing and had it cut down one inch narrower than a stock A body 8 3/4 for my 1971 Duster I bought the newer axle bearing ends from Summit and bought a set of Strange Engr. 35 spline axles and spool for it I didn't have a back brace installed on it It ended up bending really bad

A '62-'63 B-body housing is only 7/8" wider than the A-body version.

No 1-piece OEM axle will fit, but I make a reasonably priced custom length axle package that will. You must change the brakes and inner axle seals, but the original housing ends can remain intact.

But a pre-65 centersection will fit a later housing right?

Awesome thats what I wanted. I've got to clean up my other housing and get it painted up. Another question, do I need adjustable axle bearings or not? I bought a set of a body axles from Dr. Diff for my valiant and I don't think they were adjustable, atleast if they were they haven't been adjusted lol. These axles going in my later b body housing do have an adjuster. Can I just get a set of plain bearings without it?
