Lost 1 quart of oil in about 10 days of driving. It's not leaking out,and there is no visible smoke, but I get a whiff of burning oil from time to time. The idle doesn't sound quite right and oil pressure fluctuating at idle with a slight stumble.Car used no oil first 500mi,now lost a qt in 170mi.

I don't have air so thinking just make sure valves are closed and vac each cylinder,or is there more to it? Tips? Ideas?

Even with the oil smell if you're sure it ain't leaking anywhere externally I suspect an intake gasket went bad. Which will not show up on a compression test as it only checks the sealing of the long block but a broken ring tho unlikely but that could show up on a compression test depending on which ring. big or small block. did the fluctuating idle/stumble show up at the same time it started burning oil?

I just noticed the pressure bouncing around at a light yesterday. Idle doesn't sound like a miss, just not quite right.

I just resealed this intake 2 wks ago, that's when it started, didn't think of an intake gasket being the culprit, but I had an issue in the middle of the install and had to pull the intake after about 15 min and do it again. Thought the gaskets (blue Felpro) looked fine but...

I'd pick up some new gaskets & go back in there. EDIT Permatex spray "high tack" part # MA99 iirc the red stuff & it goes on light/even & is extremely tacky & seals very well on composition gaskets like those Felpro's. Were they the "printo seal" with the blue borders around the ports?

Blue paper with the raised grooves that go against the head.

I think the plugs would look worse than that for a quart every 170 miles. I would think the you would see and smell it regularly either on decel, accel, start-up, and/or at idle, depending on the cause.

I put cardboard under the car, and not a drop of oik.I doubt I broke a ring, since it never burned a drop before I pulled the intake it would make more sense to believe I botched the install. Gaskets should be here this AM,but probably have to wait till my next day off to try again. Thinking it's probably only leaking under pressure, and it's fresh oil, hence the clean plugs. I only used permatex around the water ports, and probably laid it on too thick,an I bet it caused distortion.

I couldn't get the Photobucket to open up & I didnt't know if it was my antiquated computer or the link itself. Some of the supplied end rail gaskets are too thick & hold the intake up from seating on the sides an unnoticeable amount that causes a problem over time but that problem is usually a front coolant leak. Holler how it goes. EDIT make sure the locating pin on each end on the china wall fits the hole in the intake & might mockup the intake with just the side gaskets & check the front/rear gap & therefore see how thick of end gaskets are needed & compare that to what's in your kit or just use a wide/carefully placed swath of silicone instead on brake kleened surfaces & let it set up overnight

I used about a 1/2" bead of red Permatex on the ends,no gaskets.

Thanks for the help Robert, hoping you nailed it.

I have the car out...and oh yeah,I smell it now. Just the tiniest littl puffs out the driver's side bank at startup, goes away when warmed up.
