You don't need the ballast but you should hook the wires on both sides of the ballast together and use them to power the small red wire on the MSD.

You can solder a heavy wire in the back of the ballast also.Looks stock but is direct.Rocky

That's what I did on my friend's '71 Challenger, works like a charm. OEM appearance, MSD performance.......

Mark mine runs thru the ballast on the 65.Been that way for over 10 years now.Never a problem.I do have a new ballast with soldered wire to replace it when it finally dies.Rocky

Don't agree with that. My 6AL2 wouldn't run right and the first thing MSD asked was does it have a ballast resistor. They said eliminate it and I did. Problem went away. Basically with the resistor that car would not run.
So you had a problem with your ballast resistor....or maybe it is different for the 6AL2? This question has been discussed over and over through the years and always arrives eventually at the same answer. MSD have confirmed it too. It gets confusing cos all they usually say is 'you don't need a ballast'. But if you want to use one....it will make no difference to the functioning of the MSD 6AL .
