Do you use a ballast resister when using the MSD ignition ?...MSD Distributer ,and ign box...I called MSD and they didn't give me a good answer..IT's a 512 in a 64 Polara..

You don't need the ballast but you should hook the wires on both sides of the ballast together and use them to power the small red wire on the MSD.

Correct, the MSD unit does not NEED a ballast resistor. However it can be used with one if you want to, it basically doesn't care about the signal voltage.
Possible reasons to keep the ballast:
- If you care about stock appearance
- If you want to be able to get home if the MSD unit fails
- Easier installation (really marginal though)

I'm not saying whether these are good reasons for you, it's up to you.
Usually the best reason for getting rid of the ballast is in case that fails...you removed one failure mode.

The choice is yours!!

You can solder a heavy wire in the back of the ballast also.Looks stock but is direct.Rocky

Don't agree with that. My 6AL2 wouldn't run right and the first thing MSD asked was does it have a ballast resistor. They said eliminate it and I did. Problem went away. Basically with the resistor that car would not run.

That's what I did on my friend's '71 Challenger, works like a charm. OEM appearance, MSD performance.......

So you had a problem with your ballast resistor....or maybe it is different for the 6AL2?
This question has been discussed over and over through the years and always arrives eventually at the same answer. MSD have confirmed it too. It gets confusing cos all they usually say is 'you don't need a ballast'. But if you want to use one....it will make no difference to the functioning of the MSD 6AL .
