Who has the best prices for a stroker kit for a 340? How much block clearanceing do you have to do? building a street and strip (more street) engine want to run 12.5 et in a Duster. What else is needed?
Thanks for your help.

The notch isn't that much, nor is it difficult. And that is the only mod required to stuff a 4" crank in one. 12.5 to one is easy too with 4" crank. A zero deck flat top will get you there.

o deck with a flat top piston will be too much compression for pump gas 91 octane, will need to be around 9.2:1 J heads with 2.02 valves

I was happy with the kit and service supplied by RPM a couple of years ago. At the time, they were $100 or so cheaper than anyone else I checked for the same parts.

KB Forged slugs
SCAT I beams
Eagle forged crank, etc...

I built 1 for a friend and it is 10.3-1 with aluminum heads and is doing fine on 91

You really need to know the chamber size of the heads you are going to use before you know for sure what your final comp ratio will be.

Why do you think you have to build a STROKER to run 12.5?

1970 Duster
Edelbrock headed 408
5.984@112.52
422 Indy headed small block
5.982@112.56 mph
9.42@138.27

I run 12.56 with a stock 360 and 3.23 gears

you should have no problems running 12.0 or even 11.50's with a warm 360 and a stock body car ( 3400+ lbs)

Some of us just like to do it at a lower RPM range and have much snappier response on the street.

There is no douth that you can build a 340 to run low 12 but at what street cost with 91 octane. My friend would like to take his Duster for a round trip of about 300 miles without always looking at the heat gauge worring about detonation. We are using cast iron J heads with 65cc chambers. For those of you saying you can do what we are looking for --What convertor, what cam, what CR you running.

I was told by Hughes that I need to be around 9.2-1 or lower should have no more than 160 cranking presure.

I feel it can be done much easier and safer and have better street manners with more cubic inches.

What CR can you run with cast iron heads and not be on the borderline for detonation?

Thanks

Here's my 340 build in the 70's and the first engine I ever built.
340 stock bore stock stroke
stock 10.5-1 heads 2.02 valve and slightly cleaned up with sanding rolls and a drill.
590 lift solid cam
273 adjustable rockers
Offenhauser portasonic intake.
850 holley
727 trans 3800 stall turbo action converter.
4:56 gear 3150 pound car
headers
Drove it to the track on formula one super stock tires unhooked the headers and ran an 11.82 on sunoco 94

2nd engine built was a 340 for a Friend and I charged him 5 dollars to build. (I bought 5 dollars of hot balls and jawbreakers to share)
340 stock bore, stock crank, rods, and pistons.
new out of the box rings and bearings.
484 purple shaft hydraulic cam.
750 holley
2.02 valved heads
headers
727 trans and my 3800 turbo action, 4.56 gear, 3100 pounds
12.21 quarter-mile first time he ever went to a drag-strip.
I would highly recommend a set of edelbrock heads to assist with running pump gas and an LD340 intake.
Here's my old car and me many years ago. (I'm 57 now)

1970 Duster
Edelbrock headed 408
5.984@112.52
422 Indy headed small block

Sorry! Misread. Thought I read 12.5 compression, not 12.5 et.
Honestly for a 12.5 car, a cast crank with I beam rods, and hyper pistons would be fine. You will need a dish piston for 9.5 compression. Might as well run a 4" crank, as it doesn't really cost much more to up the cubes. I think you could build this motor as mild as you want and run mid 12s.
If it were me I would run a cam in the mid 280 duration range, an rpm intake, or single plane, and a holley 750 carburetor.
Just so you know it may run better than mid 12s when done.

i run 12.22 with 3.91 gear 28" slick, mix race gas and 93, 360, stock crank and rods, home ported J's milled to 60cc, 11.25cr, 205 cranking psi, single plane ,750 Holley, small solid 244/256 at .050, 4,400 dynamic stall , i do back off the timing to 30 total and run only 93 on the street seems to run almost as strong as track prep, runs nice on the street this way for the last 10K miles. I feel your leaving a lot on the table with this build if your not going to up the CR 160 cranking psi is pretty lame
