I just transplanted the '87 318 that my Uncle had warmed up in his/my '87. MP cam one step above stock,MP 4bbl intake and new Edelbrock AVS, and duals. Runs great, way better than any 318 I ever had before.

Here's what you do: 1. Look at all the porting articles yourself and do some work on the heads, if they are the 302 with the heart-shaped chambers. 2. Buy a set of either MP or MR Gasket thin head gaskets. 3. Find a double roller timing set. 4. Decide whether you want to change valvesprings or not. If you don't then find a cam out of the first generation 360 roller engine and slip it in. If you do, mail your camshaft to Bullet Cams and have them regrind using the 259/.316 lobe. You'll end up with about .474 lift so you'll need better springs and probably cut down the valve guides for retainer-to-seal clearance, which is easier than it sounds. The stock umbrella type seals are OK, the stock guide OD is 0.625.
Hughes 1110 springs work, I think Comp 901s do too.
Add the 4-barrel intake of your choice. I am using a 1976 360 TQ intake and a Q-jet. Those mid-70s LA intakes are really good, real high rise designs, but don't drop it on your foot!
Use headers or the best exhaust manifolds you can get ahold of.
You should pick up about 50hp, maybe more. This with little loss of torque or economy.

The proper carb/intake/cam/headers will wake it up a bit. If you don't like the fact its a 5.2 just stroke it to a 390. Just the basics is the cheapest way to wake it up
I have nothing against it being 'just a 318'. Tell you the truth I added that because I was expecting to hear the 'its just a 318, why waste your time'

Is the 302 the casting # inside the portion covered by the valve cover? If so then yes this engine has them.
I have an edelbrock performer and AVS-500 on my other/currently installed engine. Would that be enough or still choking off things badly.
