you are aware I have had many problems installing a sure grip in my 8 1/4 rear-end!!! In order to pass on my knowledge gained from this adventure and to help someone else avoid the same headaches, I have come up with the following. There are at least 3 types of housings for the 8 1/4. Two of them use interchangeable suregrips, they are the 1975 and later and the 1974 and earlier up to around 1968. This carrier "suregrip" uses a different size ID and OD bearing and so far will not interchange with the earlier mentioned suregrip! Now I an not sure which suregrip I need or if one was available prior to 68. No one seems to know. If anyone out there can add to my assessmets please do.

I'm not sure if this helps you figure this out or not, but I've heard that there exists such a rear end that looks exactly like an 8 1/4" but its really an 8 3/8" rear. I heard they were used in trucks. Maybe this is what you've encountered... Good luck in your search...

Hi Ted,

Once upon a time I ran across a '79 Doba that had a 8.25 Suregrip 2.45 ratio. We tried to put the suregrip into a '76 Roadrunner (Volare) that had something like 2.94 ratio. Turns out the carriers are different in the spacing from the bearing to the ring gear mounting surface.

Is the carrier too far forward due to incorrect bearing ID/OD? Or to far to the passenger side of the car and hitting the pinion? Our problem was the latter.

hope this helps in a small way,
mark

the 8 3/8 is like an 8 3/4 falls out the front, used in late 70's heavy 1/2 ton service type trucks.

right now it's a little of both. But I think the Side to Side is my biggest problem. I have a Specialist called in
We will See. But the Way my luck is running I would be willing to bet pennys for dollors, I will end up buying a new suregrip, cause the car is on the rack and I have to pay for labor anyways!

Well it turns out that I did indeed have to buy a new carrier,, in the end the one I originaly had would not carry the 3:55 gear set I wanted to put in. To recap this is what I have learned.
1. The early housing "pre 70" uses a diffrent bearing set then either the 75 and older or the 75 and newer housing does. There are 3 diffrnet carriers "sure Grip" Make sure you have the correct one for your housing because they are not interchangable. All in all if I had to do it over again. If I did not get an 8 1/4 with the correct gear set and sure grip already in place, I would go with an 8 3/4 set up. I have spent.
$100 for the housing
$50 for the gear set
$300 for the correct Sure Grip
$250 for the labor.
$700 to get this 8 1/4 togeather. I have done 8 3/4 for around $600. So for about the same price I could have had a much better rear-end. I hope my woes have or will help someone in the future.

The 8-3/8 ring gear is used in Dakota (for sure, maybe others, too) applications of the 8-1/4... it's only 1/8" larger diameter, and is a direct bolt in. I think the 741 case also uses an 8-3/8" ring gear, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

The 2.45:1 gear set has it's own sure grip unit. The pinion gear gets HUGE on really low numerical gears, and the 2.45 is about as bad as it gets. TO keep any ring gear strength, they had to offset the ring gear a bit more away from the pinion gear so they could make the ring gear thicker. The 2.45 sure grip will only work with the 2.45 gear set. I guess you could use a spacer if you had to, but who makes those?
