I've been thinking a lot about the color of my Super Bee lately. When I started the restoration in 2005, I absolutely hated the original color of Y4 gold. The original engine was long gone, and there was no build sheet. I decided to paint the car a color I would have ordered if I bought it in 1969. I looked over original color charts, and decided on 999 Vitamin C orange.
Two years into the restoration, I discovered that no Super Bees were painted this color. Still, the car looked great and the restoration was completed in 2008.
This was a rotisserie restoration, so the entire body was painted orange.
A couple years ago, I saw a Dart with a fresh coat of Y4. Like my Bee, it had a white interior, stripe and top. It looked pretty amazing.

So, I have been wondering what it would cost to change my car back to it's proper color. Cost is definitely a consideration, but keep this in mind - my Bee is not an investment. I will never get back what I put into it. That's never been the objective. It's a car I plan to keep for a long time. It seems like if I were to do this, it would be best to do it while everything is still factory fresh.
I think I know what it would cost to do this, but I'd like to hear your opinions.

Any other reasons for wanting to switch back? Is the orange constantly gnawing at the back of your mind?

I think it looks awesome as-is, and I wouldn't pay more money to change such a great job. Doesn't matter if it wasn't available per-se. Just pretend someone got it off the lot and painted it Colors grow on you over time. Like said, can always put it back to another color later once this paint job gets worn out.

I don't think you could afford the $$ and time it would take to change colors, it's costly to do it right since your car was done right when it was painted orange. Life is short, enjoy your car like it is, imo.

I am real glad I went with the original GY8 on my 71 challenger after someone painted it red-orange twice before I got it.

I loved orange for the first couple years. Then, I started seeing properly done gold cars.
The more I saw, the more I regretted going with orange. I mean, it looks pretty amazing the way it is, but I have become more of a purist over the past few years.

sounds like a good reason to start a new car

That is something I have been thinking a lot about too. Currently, I run my own business, which takes a lot of my time (today I have a breather from the action).
My wife and I live in a 1200 sq ft house with a 1 car garage, so I don't have the space to take on another project. We already have two other classics in storage. We are hoping to upgrade in the next couple years, so getting a shop is a possibility.
The other option is to sell the Bee and find another car closer to what I want - originality.
This is a heart-breaking thing to even type since it was my first restoration and the car has been a show winner at several concours events. I mean, the car is kinda part of the family.

Doesn't sound like you have the time now to do as much work restotring a car as you did with the Bee originally.

Be patient and constantly looking for the "right" car to replace it. Hopefully something local you can see in person. Then be ready willing and able to pounce on it.

Then sell your Orange Bee.

But you will need to create your own destiny. So you need to sort of get out there to events and functions and drop hints of looking for suitable replacement cars. Sounds like you get out allready, so maybe just drop the hints and communicate. At the same time you probably will line up potential buyers for the Orange Bee.

You need to sell that Bee as quick as possible.

Don't even think twice.

I only know of one guy on the planet who goes nuts for Vitamin C. MOPARS. Check out this BIRD I sold and still am kicking myself.

So please do the honorable thing and PM me before someone talks sense into you.

I will make this problem go away in a PAIR of SECONDS!

If the rest of this machine is as stunning as the color, let's play MAKE A DEAL.

Tons of labor cost to disassemble most of the car just to get it to the point of repaint. Then paint. Then re-assembly. Now since the parts coming off are already restored and you plan to use them again it's going to be extra time consuming. And then special care needs to be taken to remove and store all the parts to keep them from getting damaged (just expect some will).

Paint costs very so much from shop to shop. Even if quality is the same. You should go back to the guy who painted the car and ask him.

I'm guessing $5K to $8K just for paint switch. Probably more. Not the labor of dis-assembly and reassembly. A WAG at dis-assembly and reassembly of $6.5K plus. I would WAG at 80 hours of labor at $80/hr top knowledgeable mopar shop. Probably more. I bet that is low.

Sounds about right, autoxcuda.
I wonder if there are some other ways to save money. For example, the entire car may not have to come apart. Perhaps the undercarriage could receive undercoating. I am done showing the car, and spend a lot more time driving it. I want it to look as good as it does now, but a painted underside is not practical.
Just a thought.

I was not even figuring the painted undercarriage. That will be big bux.

You can probably keep the vinyl top and dash in there. Maybe keep the interior with carefull masking (labor intensive and high quality labor). But some spot will be missed.

But K-member w/motor and suspension will have to be dropped. Grill assy out, all trim that borders paint... on and on.

Even if you went undercoating, it's still takes labor to put it on.

Too me something like this takes experience, craftsmanship and judgement. I'd think about Rocket Restoration or a quality speciality Mopar shop in your region.

I wouldn't be surprise if it ended up costing you near half amount you could sell the car for.

Rocket was the first name I thought of.

To be honest, I doubt I would do all this. The money spent changing the color could buy me another classic car. Or, we could put a bit more down on our second house.
My wife would agree with that second scenario.

I'm gonna try and talk you out of it. My friend has a 68 R/T in the gold your talking, with a black top and black interior. Its looks nice but it looks very boring. It looks too "grandmaish" Stay with your 999 color because in my personal opinion it looks great. I wouldn't change a single thing (unless its a automatic).

I agree,....while I don't normally like the Hi-Impact colors on Mopars of 69 and down vintage, unless it's a full custom, but not in "stockish" trim,....BUT I have to say the Orange works nicely with the stipe/trim/interior combo on this Bee,...I wouldn't change it, unless it was to paint it Black,...GrandMa Gold will just take away the visual impact the car currently has...seriously

Gold and black is pretty boring, but gold and white is pretty striking. The car is a factory n96 4 speed car.

I'd actually would like to talk you into repainting it, but you'd have to agree to TRIPLE BLACK, then you'd be... BADD BEE instead of New Bee

Dang New Bee, your devotion to the car is admirable!!!
Personally, given that its a NOM 383 car, I wouldn't even consider it. And hey, you and I have something in common, my car is a NOM 383 4 speed cuda, originally a 'low demand' color like gold---F4 green , that's the olive green metallic...now J5 sublime--you've seen it.
I wouldn't even consider what you are thinking.

My opinion??? The time is right, you have a 1200 sqft house? Step up and please the wife. It's the better decision. Your bee is gorgeous.....leave it alone

A12, I absolutely love the way your car looks, so I hope you don't take offence to my "boring" comment. I have seen what my car looks like in black and gold, and I am not excited about it. It doesn't have that huge matte black hood scoop!

The next house which we will design and build wont be a lot more than 1200 sq ft as it's just the two of us. The increase will mostly come in the land and the shop.
I didn't know your Cuda was F4 - it looks way better sublime. Of course, sublime is a 70s color. Y4 gold is a very 60s color, which is why I am having a little regret here.

I am very dedicated to my Bee. I saved it when nobody else was interested. It's one of those milestones in life.

considering that it's just starting into prime cruising season, you don't have the time, space or the money and have other goals (house etc.), I would suggest that you swap it out for one of the others in storage so it's not in your face eating away at you. It's beautiful and finished. AFTER you have more time, money and space, THEN decide.

Swapman, it's a 383 4sp car with its original 3:91 gears.
Of course, everything has its price, but it would take a lot more than its worth for me to ever consider selling it.

I will agree with others to keep it Orange 999.
Its done, awesome, and if you dont like it simply because of the paint color, buy another Bee thats restored already and sell off the one you have. Nuff said?
Enjoy it, wish I had it.

I agree,

But to the OP, if you ever want to talk? We can.

Besides it rains to much in OREGON. I can take it out and STRETCH its legs a few times.

Car is way to cool to change color. But in the end it is your car. And I love it.

I can fix that !!

Keep it orange. It's not original anyways so I would rip off the vinyl top and color match the roof (not into vinyl tops on ANY car).

If you have to have a Y4 car, find another car w/that coded. Maybe an R/T or a 'vert to change things up a bit.

That car is begging for some big honking tires under the rear wheel wells.

SELL IT and buy a real 99/ 999 paint coded car

The car is stunning! Leave it as is. Your original reasoning for painting it orange is still legit. That devil guy is just sitting on your shoulder saying you shoulda painted it gold dude - messing with your head. Swat him off and enjoy that orange beauty.

You got that right! (had to weigh in on that one)
I really like your car. The orange looks great. I don't mind gold, but as good as your car looks it would be hard for me to justify repainting it.
O/T, I think the big thing '69 Bees were missing was a top banana like yellow. The pale yellow just doesn't pop like a yellow should on a BEE.

If you were to have EVERYTHING done by someone else, I would say maybe $20-30k for a color change.

$10-20k in body work/paint (won't need much body work if you have it blasted to remove the paint, but still a lot to come off), and $10k in dismantling, re-assembly.

change the color of the lenses in your glasses to make your car look like a different color, cause to paint that beautiful car poop gold would be a crime.

I'm not going for anything yet.
I am still torn - I love the way the car looks in orange, but I have become more of a purist as I get older. So, I am trying to sort out the conflict. As I said earlier, this car has never been about the money. I love owning it, and I restored it as a learning experience plus I wanted to save a classic muscle car.
I could sell it and buy a more correct car, but I know this one inside and out.
There is a lot of value in that alone.

I'm pretty much over the high impact colors. Orange, purple, sublime etc... I find those colors more boring than greens, golds, browns and so on now.

I always regretted painting my 69 runner sublime over the original bronze. But I didn't regret going from white to silver on a 70 runner. I did go with black on my 70 challenger that was green originally... but only because I wanted to do a black ta clone.

Anyways, your car, no way I'd change it back unless it needed paint... your car looks way too nice to go through the hassle.

Do whatever YOU want. But if you are contemplating making a big mistake, sell it to ME!

The only question I would ask is-How is the suspension? It would take a beating rolling on the cowpaths we call roads in ILLINOIS.

Everything on this car was restored except the steering wheel, ramcharger hood components, some dash parts and license plates. Those items only needed a good cleaning. The suspension is all rebuilt with polyurethane bushings, and we put a large sway bar on the front. We did the bigger sway bar to help a friend test his prototype. While its not a stock diameter, it worked great so I decided to leave it on. The only other non-stock mechanical bits are the high torque starter, a slightly bumpier cam, and electronic ignition.
