I need to order some fluid from my mechanic for my 904. This is a fresh build, never ran before, with a summit deep pan on it, a trans cooler with 3/8" cooler lines, and an 8" converter. I have no idea how much fluid to order, and want to make sure I have enough when I go to fire this thing up for the first time since I will be worrying about breaking in the flat tappet cam and don't want to be worrying about running way too low or high on trans fluid...I know everyone's amount they use may be different, but just trying to get an idea here so im in the ballpark.

Thanks!
Matthew

Like you said every car is not the same, did you put any in the converter? converter size? I would start with 7 and have a few at the ready

Bone dry like yours...same pan...new lines..new cooler..8 in converter,,,my 904 took 12 qts.

Just started up a new engine/904 combo..with MP deep pan put 6 qts in it...fired engine in neutral..dumped another 4-5 qts in it while engine was broke it.

I would throw in 8-10 qts from a bone dry system...
I expect you will be breaking in the cam with the trans
in park... with the trans in park it doesnt pump the
fluid so if you check the level it would be wrong..
it will have plenty in it to lube the parts and when
you get done with the cam put it in N after you run
it through the gears then when in N check the level
and add to full

I put a wee bit in the converter, but I had to install the converter and trans from under the car with the engine already in since I had a converter issue, so I couldn't put much in there in case it spilt out.

7 quarts or liters?

Happy Birthday Tony!

I am thinking of grabbing 12 quarts just to be safe, and whatever I don't end up using I have leftover for the first fluid change

Mr. P, can I break in the cam with the trans in neutral? I was aware of the pump not building pressure in park with the torqueflites, and because my trans is going to be fired up bone dry and I would like to have the motor up to break in rpms in about 30 seconds or so, I was going to start it and run it in neutral so fluid is pumping through and everything is getting lubed up.

Or am I wrong in my thinking?

better yet, jack the rear up so the wheels are free to turn. if clutch clearances are even a little too tight you will burn them from lack of lube.
