Wife cruising along at 60 MPH
Car died.
She tried to restart
Tow truck driver tried to restart
Some other guy tried to restart

I get home from out of town, car dead in driveway

Take fornt end off, tensioner bolt broke. Timing belt massive FUBAR

I am getting warranty belt and tensionser, new oil pump housing.

Question, when I go to restart, how much damage do you think there will be to the valves? This is an interference engine. Each rotation was making a piston hit at least two sets of valves. How bad is the damage is your guess?

Should I do a compression check or just try & fire the car up?

replace water pump since you're there. Not positive about the 02 models, but all the earlier years were NOT interferance.I have Done at least 50 3.5's timing belt/water pumps.never had an internal issue. The only thing against you would be being on the E-way,higher rpm.But I wouldn't loose any sleep over it yet.probably fine.

Pull the valve covers. If there is a bent valve you will see the excessive lash.

It's usually pretty obvious.

I would do that before I bothered trying to put it back together.

3.2/3.5`s after 98 are interference
The simple way to remember is aluminum plenum engines are not interference and plastic plenum engines are.

While i`ve done them and been lucky, just as many weren`t lucky and dinged a few valves

Pulling the covers and looking for excessive lash isn`t the best idea as they can and will sometimes just tap the valves enough to unseat them, it will not be real noticible if at all, your best bet is to toss a belt on it without putting the whole front back together and light it up and see how it goes from there.
If it is hurt it will help to know by a compression check (now that it is in time) which cylinders you are dealing with.

Well, I just put a belt, tensioner, radiator, water pump, new belts and hoses on it a month ago.

The damn bolt in the new tensioner sheared off at the oil pump housing. So I am buying a new oil pump too.

It is suppoed to be 70 degrees here onThurs. I am gonna try & take off early & put it back together. So far the hardest thing is the damn oil pan. That is a VERY tight fit. Someone said use ramps instead of letting the front wheels hang and it will come off easier.

If you remove the two passenger side bolts that mount the sway bar to frame, you can shove the bar back far enough to clear oil pan on removal.

I'll try that too.

This thing is a major PITA. Cast aluminum, no flex and thick.

Why not just drill the remains and remove it, been there done that lots of times...once the bolt is drilled you do have to apply some heat to the bolt to loosen the thread locker that is applied to it.
No way would I replace a pump housing for just a broken tensioner bolt.

When I removed the first tensioner bolt it was coming out just fine, then bound, then came out. The housing stripped threads in the middle of the hole. I helicoiled it.

That made me uneasy right there. Now that this failure has occurred, I am replacing it.
