I have another thread going on another site and it's about a low cost "home shop" method of plating some small part with zinc. What does it cost to have small parts zinc plated and how long does it take to get the parts turned around and finished from a commercial shop on average?

Can you have it done for less than $50 including shipping?

There are a few shops around me that do it. They have a base charge for barrel plated items. The base charge was $40 a couple years ago. I had to do mine in two smaller batches because I wasn't very organized. If I would have had everything ready at the same time, I could have gotten every clear zinc plated part on the car done for $40. That includes the larger items like coil bracket, spare tire stud/nut and heater hose bracket. If a part will fit in their barrel, it's just one fee. I had Key City Plating in Dubuque do mine. They even ran the kick down linkage through for free. I had everything clean before dropping it off. Muriatic acid makes short work of cleaning up fasteners. Look in the yellow pages and I'm sure you may find someone local.

Here's what and why I was asking; not just for auto/truck resto but small jobs like this bike resto. I can think of quite a few things on the car I need zinc plated and this seems pretty down and dirty (cheap) to do, all for less than $30. Seems way too easy...anyone tried this?

I'm very organized with "all" my small parts to be zinc plated in a list so I know exactly where each one came from so that I can get each one back exactly where it belongs. However, $70 is the minimum charge in my area, and I have been reluctant to get started with a plating shop, because I know something will be overlooked, and I'll end up getting stuck for multiple minimum charges. Looks like the link above is just the ticket - my parts are cleaned and ready for plating. With the battery charger, I can do a convenient batch any time.

I already have Caswell's blue/clear, yellow, black, and olive drab chromates, so I'll be able to chromate with these colors too.

I'll bet the same set up will copper plate also, for the few copper plated parts, such as distributor clamp and some push type spring nuts.

I'll try the battery charger method soon and report back. One thing I wonder about is the motorcycle restorer never mentioned that plating occurs only on the side of an object that is facing the zinc anode, and you need several anodes around the perimeter to plate all sides of an object like a screw, nut, or washer. I understand parts with complex shapes are challenging to plate evenly all over. This is why zinc plated steel tubing is plated on the outside only.

I've used these guys before and was happy with the results.

thought I got a lot of parts plated for the money. quick turnaround... I had the parts back in my hands in about 2 weeks. for the time and effort it appears to take to do yourself sending out to professional plater seems like money well spent
