I've got a narrowed 8 3/4 and the center section is a '489 that has the thrust button, so my passenger side axle shaft doesn't go in all the way. Is there a link to a good page/thread where this has already been answered? Do all center sections have thrust buttons?

I might be able to grab one from my brother and get rolling while I sort this out.
Thanks guys!

They are not hard to remove. They have a roll pin
that holds both halves together. They adjust the
bearing preload for tapered bearings.

From what I understand it could have the two 'buttons' or a thrust 'block'. The buttons have a roll pin you can see when looking at it through the side where the axle slides in? I can see it, but it won't come out. I wacked it with a 13/16" socket on an extension, and a large hammer, but it didn't budge.

I've looked it up, and I have the cone type sure grip. I read that it's hard to remove the thrust block from these. I guess you have to tear it all apart. Does anyone have a picture of the difference between the button/block so I know if I have to tear it apart?

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

It won't budge driving it. It does not drive through. The hole it is in is smaller than the button head. They have to be pulled out. The roll pin holding the 2 halves together will 99% of the time be broken anyway so that is of little consequences. For this reason I never use one. It is just to hold the 2 halves together for assembly purposes anyway.
