so i noticed some oil on the valley pan and upon closer inspection i noticed several small cracks right on the middle of it, is this common? should i be worried? its a 67 440 with eddy heads and eddy performer rpm intake

Not too common. Ma put that fiberglass mat in there to stop vibrations from cracking it. Me I'd go ahead & replace it

Is the center of the valley pan pushed up? If it is it is caused by blow by.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Make sure you have at least 1 breather. If no breather and you run pcv valve it will crack the valley tray.

I had a breather and PCV valve on my big block. a WOT blast would pop the dipstick out of the tube, and I cracked 2 of those pans.

took my breather out and examined it more closely. it was difficult to blow through it, the opening was barely punched open, and resembled the butterfly of a carb that was cracked open for a fast idle. I punched it out, and tried again. this time the filter element was so thick that it was still a struggle to blow through it.

I removed the dense thick filter stuff and put some very lightweight foam in there.

no more popped dipstick and no more cracked pans.

that makes me feel way better, i removed the breather from the pass side valve cover right before i went racing cause it didnt fit quite right, and at the track it would push the dipstick out a lil and spray a lil oil on the header above 5500 rpms, that makes sense now.. thanks guys.... its getting a better fitting breather and a new valley pan today..
