I am rebuilding the 360 in my truck. I yanked all the emissions, bolting on J-heads that have been rebuilt with 2.02 valves intake, 1.60 exhaust, flat tops pistons, .030 over on the block, and all the other little upgrades which come with a rebuild.
I need a some good advice on a camshaft.
- Decent gas mileage
- torque to tow a trailer
- using stock torque convertor
- also using power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning for accessories.

Comp Cams recommended their COMP 318-340-360 MOPAR 268/280 .477/.480 XTREME ENERGY HYD CAM CAMSHAFT CHRYSLER.

Any suggestions or recommendations about this choice or some experience with another stick?

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Bob

I have a '81 d-150 with a 360, and I am rebuilding it with a Doug Herbert Cam #HERCE1N $134.99 for the cam & lifters or $79.99 for just the cam.
It is described as the perfect combination of power and mileage with good torque.
If you think you need more cam, the next size it the #HRECE2N

Furthermore...I'll never buy a Comp cam again! If you are not enthusiastic about Doug Herbert cams, then I highly recommend Hughes Cams or Racer Brown cams

I hear you about comp. I've had different folks tell me that their cam recommendations are off, and that the quality has gone down. So that is why I'm looking for alternatives and suggestions on what other people use, or are using. I'd like to know gas mileage numbers both towing and not towing. Thanks.

My 360 is still on the stand so I don't have any results yet, but I have been comparing things, researching, and checking out how other people on Moparts have built engines that supposably get 20-25 mpg. Aside from them, most people choose a cam that is too big. I was told that small block Mopars with unmodified ports don't flow any more air over .400 lift, even if the valve was not in the head. That sounds strange, but who knows? That being said, I like the specs on the Doug Herbert #HERCE1N cam...and I can still use my stock valve springs since they checked out good. Racer Brown has a great mileage cam # EH11, but it comes at a higher price. Isky Cams has their Mile-a-more cams at an even higher price. Another major fact is compression. The highest compression that you can use for a specific octane rated fuel will net you the highest MPG. Try to search old Moparts posts about MPG engine builds. I wish you luck with your 360. I heard that they are pigs as far as gas mileage goes, but I hope to change that on mine with the help of the cam, and other modification, including an overdrive transmission!

We used a Comp Cams XE268H in my sons 84 D150 360, stock heads / valves and even kept the stock lifters, valve springs, pushrods and rockers (rebuilt longblock) along with a Weiand Action Master Intake, 600 Edelbrock and Hedman Headers.....very happy with the performances
