Hello. Starting to put together a 71 340. I noticed that neither the heads nor the block have guide pins as many other motors do. Did it ever have them or do I need them? I took apart a 318 and it didn't have them either. I thought they would be necessary for alignment. Thanks

They should be there in the block , if the block was decked the shop didn't replace them.

But be careful they are NOT .250 dowels , more like .246 .

Im about 99% positive the SB chevy ones work. I bought a 318 that didnt have them either and I put them in when I put it back together. Pretty sure those are the ones I used.

You are correct. Small block Chevy are the same. The .246 ones are for timing covers. Luckily for me a local engine builder had them. Thanks to all for your help.

The guy at the engine shop said the .246 ones were for timing covers. I didn't check to see if he was right.
