Take a test light, disconnect the wire to the sending unit, probe the wire end and ground the test light....with the key in the on position, the test light should flash about every 2 seconds...if it's doing that then the circuit is OK to the sending unit. If no power at all, you have a dash guage/voltage limiter/wire problem. Check the ground strap to the sending unit too.

take the wire off the sending unit at the tank and ground it against the car. The gauge if working will go to past full.....If it does so the probelm is the sending unit....many times the float has just sprung a leak and is full of fuel. Ford dealer has new brass floats.

The temp gage and the gas gage are on the same circuit. Make sure the ground strap is good from the sender to the metal line. If not both will not read correctly.

Take a long jumper wire with 1 small and 1 large alligator clip on it & (1) pull the blue wire/90 deg connector off of the sender & connect the blue wire to the batt NEG post/terminal up front & with key on if the gas gauge needle pegs past F then all is good from the blue wire/90 deg connector forward. If not check the connectors forward to the dash then the gauge etc. If good plug the connector back in to the sender. With the other jumper end still on the batt neg, scrape the other end small alligator clip on the sender metal circular flat & have a helper see if the gauge moves up/reads correct. If not drain the tank & pull the sender (float/windings). If yes remove the clip from the batt & scrape one end on the tank & one end on the sender flat & if it works then the sender ain't grounded to the tank. If it dont then the tank ain't grounded to the body. EDIT Stumpy is right, the sender is grounded to the hard line with the short metal clipon piece NOT from the sender to tank/tank to body as I stated

They are two seprate circuits that share a power source but get their ground ,which gives you the reading, from different grounds. The temp grounds though it's threads in the block. The gas gauge grounds through the fuel line via a metal jumper that joins the line from the sender to the main fuel line. A bad ground on one will not affect the other.
