Researching this a bit. From what I have seen of the Jag clutch I believe it is standard duty:

http://www.haydenauto.com/featured%20products-fan%20clutches%20and%20fan%20blades/content.aspx

Which means, to me anyway, that this is not ideal if a heavy steel fan is hanging on it. It is only rated at 60-70% and I assume this is with a plastic fan and less blade pitch.

I need to move as much air as I can. Mild 383, using a 3 core 22" brass radiator. On the test stand, the engine would idle "all day" with the CFM of a box fan (on high) in front of it.

I'm not sold on the Jag clutch, so am looking for either a HD clutch, direct drive, or electric. Just looking through Summit there are some smaller electrics, not sure if I could get maybe two 9 or 10 in fans across the core. Some move some good CFM for their size... must mean they are spinning hard (i.e. loud).

I've got 3" between the pulley and core to play with.

Thanks.

All I know is I've had mine on for over 5 years, with a heavy steel fan off a '66 383. It's a '67 Dart with 440, and I went with the Jag clutch for the shortened shaft length. It would not cool using a flex fan (would climb to 220+). Clutch fan helped it over the flex fan, but the final setup was to add an Aerostar shroud for the Summit aluminum radiator. Now it rarely goes over 200 degrees.

It works great. Possibly you can find a lighter fan if you don't want to run the stock one. I don't think it's an issue.

If you have the 7 blade oe steel fan then you need the HD version. I tried the std version and it would not spin the fan fast enough at low rpm to cool. Now with the 7 blade fan, Hayden HD thermal clutch, 90* + with the A/C blowing and car idling it will not go over 200* (This is with a 195* Thermostat)

Which HD clutch did you use? Have a P/N? I have a 7 blade fan and also an asymmetrical 5 blade.

I've been using the Jag short clutch with a 7 bladed steel fan for several years now. I have absolutely no problems with cooling. I run a 160* stat. (The clutch doesn't engage until 180*.) Most of the time it is "free wheeling". My engine temp rarely goes above 170*. 26" aluminum rad with shroud.

Which is best for a 600hp street/strip car, thermal or non-thermal?

I use the one with the "spring" in the front center.
Thermal

I assume you are running the 2765?

Sorry I don't remember the part # but it is the HD Thermal Hayden clutch sold at NAPA that fits our applications. They sell a Standard duty thermal and a HD thermal along with the non-thermal versions.

I imagine your engine bay is bigger than mine.

I spent some time looking through the Hayden product list. The only one that will fit the constraints of my engine bay is the 2765. I got it today, we'll see how it works. It is a 'B' considered standard. The 'C' (HD) and 'D' (Severe Duty) all were too big.

Something else you can do is remove the side brackets on the radiator then have them reattached so it sets further away from the engine. You can gain at least a 1/2 inch that way. Every little bit helps.

I ran the Hayden 2765 on my 69 Road Runner 440-6BBL 4-speed, 4.10 gears with the factory #216 fan and 054 radiator, never had any cooling issues.

I used the Hayden non thermal 1705 on my 71 Demon 340 and it works great.

Do you have part numbers/links to the pieces you used? I have a 69 B'cuda w/a BB and a Summit 22" aluminum rad...gets hot at idle. I really need a shroud and a clutch fan but it's tight in there and besides a custom I didn't see much for shrouds. Thanks and sorry about the hi-jack , just been looking for ideas for a while

Not sure the pn of the clutch..

The shroud is from a Ford Aerostar, mid 90s I think. I was just walking around the junkyard and found it already removed sitting under the engine bay. Measured it and it was perfect for my Summit radiator (22"). I did cut it a bit, including a slot down below so that I could reach a breaker bar and 1.25" socket in to turn the crank. The shroud is the final piece of what fixed my cooling problem.

I assume this is the norm, but the holes are open to aid in getting the bolts started into the water pump. It is a little unnerving that the bolt heads do not seat 100% against the mounting flange.

Hopefully this makes sense...

Were the bolts too long? Are the washers big enough? That doesn't seem right to me.

No, this is normal, it is a little odd looking, though.

I tried studs then went back to HH bolts because the only "studs" I found were socket head set screws.

it's a tussle getting them in with anything bigger than a Geisha hand.
