I have a 1970 440 motor that I want to install in my 1968 383 4spd Super Bee. I want to use the 11inch flywheel from the orig 383. My interchange manual says the 1970 440's used a 10.95 in flywheel thats not interchangable with the 11in 68. I tried that anyway and all the bolts line up and appears to fit fine bolt pattern wise. It appears to be very snug at the crank alignment hole as the flywheel pulls in tightening the bolts. I also double checked the bell housing and it is fine also. My question is does the 1970 flywheel have a different bolt pattern? Or could there be balance issues if I use the 11? This 1970 motor was assembled on 9/5/69. Thanks.

The flywheels will interchange. The difference is the 11" flywheel has a 144 tooth ring gear, the 10.95" one has 130. This requires different bellhousings, casting #2892262 for 69-earier B-body 383/440, and #2892513 for 70-up B/E -body 383-440. With your B-body, either should not be a problem, but on an E, the 11" will get close onthe floor hump. Hope this helps.

If the '70 440 motor is HP it is externally balanced, the '68 flywheel will need to be modified as per the top figure (13-11) below.

Thanks for the info. I didn't want to order my clutch setup until I verified I could interchange. My plan is to rebuild the #'s 383 and use the 440 until I am done with that. The only thing I noticed was that the flywheel center hole was really snug. I could get the bolts on fine but it wouldn't tighten all the way up. I may have to buff one or the other to get it to slide on the crank a little easier. Should I have to smack that flywheel with much force to get it on? I wouldn't think so.

clean the flywheel hole and the crank flange by hand with a scotch brite pad and make sure there are no burrs on either as the flywheel should just fall right on .
