Looking at a 73 Challenger and has a vin of JH23H ... Shouldnt it be JS23H ? Maybe a diffrence of coupe or hardtop ? I dont have the little book on these years to know the difference and have always been a B-Body guy . Any help would be appreciated .

Nope. All 73-74 Challengers were JH23. The last year for JS23 was 72.

What's the difference?

Besides the letter that is.

I need to check my reference material when I get home from work, and at the risk of disseminating wrong info, (as I've been known to do on occasion... ) here goes:

In 70 and 71, JH23 was non-R/T, JS23 was R/T.
In 72, JH23 was non-Rallye, JS23 was Rallye. In 73 and 74, they were all JH23, and the Rallye cars got an A57 package code.

Check the fender tag. Rallye cars will have the A57 code on the fender tag (and build sheet if it still exists).
Not all 340's were rallyes and not all rallyes were 340's (or in 74, 360's). My 74 rallye was a 318 car.
Rallye cars will have the bulge hood, rallye gauges, front and rear sway bars, and the fender moldings behind the front wheel opening.

Also in 73, if you ordered just the 340 engine option w/o the A57 pkg, it came with the rallye hood, HD suspension, F70-14 WSW, 7-blade torque drive fan, and dual exhaust with the tips.

Thanks guys ! I looked at the fender tag for the vin to match and some of the codes i already knew in my head but dont recall the A57 . It was probably there as the car has the fender louvers , sway bars and the rallye dash . The car doesnt appear to have been fooled with in a long time , so i imagine probably came from the factory like that , but i'll certainly look for that code .

If A57 isn't on the tag, it's not a Rallye. The only way to get the fender louvers is with the Rallye package. Someone could have added them though. The fender tag will tell you for sure.

In the link Barry posted, it says that only 340 cars would receive the rear sway bar. That was changed after the data books were printed because 318 Rallyes had the rear bar too.
