I am considering doing to denso alternator swap and was looking at the info in the tech archives from AndyF.

I see that the kit is sold through mancini to mount it, but looking at the picture the mounts look the same as whats on my 383 now. Is the denso a straight bolt on, or do I need to change the mounts? The picture may just be tricking me, but they look exactly the same to me...

The mounts look the same but are different. The spacer lengths are different and the bends are different. The kit is made that way so it looks stock to the casual observer but stock parts won't fit without rework.

I dont know about anyone else, but I put an denso IR alt. off a toyota prerunner and just bolted it up to the stock mounts! Cant remember if I shimed it or not but it fits great.

1973 Charger, former SE, former auto

I'm not trying to be difficult, it comes naturally....

Andy's mount sits lower than stock.

I love how clean your engine compartment is but I do question the location of the fuel filter...

Possible fire hazard on top of the alternator like that.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

It was below the stock alternator before the swap, it's been moved but the pic is before I replumbed the filter. Very good point however.

me too. except I used one off an 02 dodge ram van, 130 amp. I did have to trim one spacer, though. took about 5 minutes with a dremel.

It's a long read, but it shows how I did it and what parts I used. I was into the whole thing for under 150. but I also bought stuff to go from single to dual field:

I just got one. 90 amp. I used the p/n for an 89 diplomat so that it would come with a v-belt pulley. To install it on my eddie headed 360 smallblock I had to do a bunch of stuff:

-take off the plastic back cover
-remove the brass standoff on the + connection and cut down the stud
-make a bracket to extend the outboard mount down (the stock bracket hits the big fan that is installed under the pulley. I used two pieces from the front and back to extend the mounting point about 4" down. I think the 'andy f' bracket has more circular roundness to come up from the bottom instead of over from the side)
-shave the front of the inboard mount about 1/8" to prevent the ceramic piece on the back from rubbing the head
-Install good ground wire and fat positive wire going straight to the battery (in addition to the stock + wire) to prevent ammeter/underdash meltdown

I did all these things last week, and fired her up and let her get warm. No problems, voltmeter reads 13 steady.

small blocks are tight with stock heads and a stock alt. I was at a friends shop and he had an cuda with a small block and eddy's. he had to shave the head to get the stock alt to fit. Denso? forget it on that one. that is a situation where you need special brackets. I think they ended going with something out of a ford. could have been a denso, don't know.

I needed more amps too, but took a different route. I had my squareback, dual-field alternator's stator rewound and heavy duty diodes installed at the local alternator shop for under $200.

Of course it bolts right up to the stock mount and looks bone stock for a 1970. It puts out 70 amps at idle and just over 125 amps above 2000 rpm. I upgraded the wiring and did the bulkhead/ameter bypass sugested in the article on Alpar.

1970 Plymouth 'Cuda #'s 440-6(block in storage)currently 493" 6 pack, Shaker, 5 speed Passon, 4.10's
1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible 408 Magnum EFI with 4 speed automatic overdrive, 3800 stall lock-up converter and 4.30's (closest thing to an automatic 5 speed going)

90a Denso
Stock brackets
Stock heads

Only modification was to trim the stud on the back.

Just how it worked out for me on a Small Block. I would still like to get my hands on a smaller pulley for this alternator..or a larger crank pulley. We'll see, may be serpentine on a magnum block soon enough. But the charging at idle with 90w H4 lights on, stereo, electric fuel pump, and my fan pullin 25-30a...it's not quite enough at idle.

Actually the Denso 60 amp alternators fit better on a SB Mopar with Edelbrock heads than do the original type alternators. A SB with Eddy heads is a great candidate for a Denso swap.

Why thank you,

Now I just have to get around to welding up the holes and smoothing the bay up some.

Larger crank pulley is probably what will be easier. I don't know that smaller alt pulleys are easy to get.

Finally - disc brakes on the front.
In the plans - rear disc brakes, B&M 250 blower

I would worry more about that kink in the upper radiator hose!!

the stock alt i saw was very very close to the eddy head on that small block. since my denso is closer to the head than my stock one was, I assumed they were fatter/deeper...my bad...i thought that most of the denso alts you see were physically the same size, but built differently inside for different amp ratings.
