When pounding out a slightly seized piston I slipped with the hammer and hit the #5 main saddle. I should have put the cap back on before doing it but in a moment of stupidity I forgot to. Did I render this block useless or will it be ok with a line bore/hone? Sorry for the poor pics, it's hard to get a good shot.

well it's more of a dent than a chip. I'm thinking if I used a stroker crank with 440 mains that would machine out....btw its a 400 block.

I would recommend that you use a file that is long enought to keep the file on the #4 saddle while filing the #5 saddle flat
X2 I would have the shop breath on the main line with the hone also.
I wouldnt waste my time... if he wasnt planning on honing the mains ... just file it ... the cap surface I would lay the file flat on the main to get it flat (touch the high spot first till close) then in the bearing surface touch the high spot till close then lay the file on the whole bearing surface to make sure its straight and flat... sure a machine shop might say it should be line honed but thats what they sell... I did this on one of my blocks and hit it with a fine file... its still turning 8200 rpms for the last 8 years... JMO

Thanks for the replies, now to get it sonic checked and decide on either a 4.15 or 4.25 stroke.

you guys are reading my mind.
Plus the most common piston for a stroker low deck is 1.32 CH , there isn't a rod that works with that piston and a 4.150 stroke . 4.25 is the way to go and you get a 6.535 rod .
you want to be careful filing it , make sure you don't take any material off the #4 saddle.
It's probably a good thing you didn't have the cap on there you probably would have broken it. I don't like driving out stuck pistons , I threw out a 68 440HP block because my buddy punch a hole right thru the cylinder wall ...
Use a round stone to take the high spot off the bearing bore .
Good luck
