Hello All,
This morning at the crack of dawn I head out to the garage to install the rear valance for his '71 Challenger R/T. I understand and got the 6 fasteners along the side installed along with the two attach screws that holds the center of the valance on. But, I'm left with these screws that came in the "rear valance kit". Is there a support plate/bracket that's missing or something? The Challenger was taken out of a shop when it was getting painted rather quickly (long story). So I have it here at the house to put it back together for him.

Thanks for insight in advance.

Cheers,
T

Rear valance installed. I see two holes on the outboard side of the valance and then 4 holes/nutplates in the frame crossover

Found this on AMD's site investigating this problem. Looks like something I need, no? Right now, the only fastener to the valance is the 3 on either side attach points to the lower quarter panel and the two center fasteners to the crossmember.

There are two brackets that attach to the rear crossmember with 2 bolts and runs down with the shape of the valance and the valance attaches to them on the bottom edge.

EDIT: yes you need those and were the parts I was describing

Troy: Those brackets are for 1970 Challengers only. The center bracket behind where the rear license plate would attach was introduced on 1971 and up rear valences. It is the "replacement" for the two brackets you have picture. The ones in your picture should really have a stud at each end rather than just a round hole, they obviously made them on the cheap, as is the case with most reproduction stuff.

Dwight,
With that said, then '71's don't have anything other than the valance itself? I'll take some more close up pictures of what I have here..

As said, you don't use the 70 brackets with the 71 & up valance...

OK,, too make sure cause I don't wanna have to yank the rear bumper off once I install it. But, there are two sets of vertical nutplates on the rear crossover. If these aren't for any sort of rear valance support bracket, what are they for? Also, I take no credit for the sloppy work on the crossover, hand that one to the bonehead bodyshop my buddy had the car at ( that's a completely long and bad story )

Was this a early 71 SPD?

The body has the 70 style nut inserts but your using a 71 valance without provisions for the 70 style brackets... It does however have the 71 & up center support.. Your done, put a fork in it...

Sorry for being anal, but as we say in the military, "only do a job once" (i.e installing the bumper)...

Thanks everyone.....

Hate to say it but it's a heck of allot easier to install the bumper first, then install the valance...

It can be done, just gonna have to be a contortionist.... If the ends of the valance have studs & nuts like they originally did pulling & reinstalling the valance shouldn't take more than five minutes...

Yeah, you're right... I'd heed your warnings.... If I get the Cheetah valve body installed in the Daytona before day's end, I'll tackle the rear bumper on the Chally.....
