ok I have done plenty searches on this subject and it appears there is 2 different opinions on this but I would like too know for sure if any of the internal head bolts enter the water jackets on a 440. I did not use sealant on the bolts and it sure looks like a bolt is leaking a small pool of anti freeze under rocker shaft.

NONE of the head bolts on a the wedge motor , or hemi, (smallblock??) are WET.

If you have water in the head either the head is cracked or the threaded boss in the block is cracked or has a hole into the coolant passage.

That is what I thought but the Haynes Chrysler big block rebuild manual states otherwise as does the Chilton's. Both claim to use sealer on the bolt threads. I have a very small amount leaking, level doesn't go down and doesn't show on the stick but I saw a couple drops of green when I pulled the valve cover to check lash.

Are you misinterpreting their saying to use "sealer" as saying to using something like Loctite, a thread locking adhesive?

I just checked Haynes and it says Permatex #2. I wouldn't.

What head gaskets ? were the heads and block surfaced during rebuild? ... assuming it was rebuilt ???

Otherwise get the engine up to operating temp , release the pressure on the cooling system , pull the valve cover and put a pressure teser on the raditor and pressurize the system , go up a little above 16 , if it's leaking you'll see it them go from there ... did i say the books are WRONG ...

motor was rebuilt 2 years ago, heads were milled slightly, used the thinner fel pros to keep compression up. changed oil and no sign of coolant in oil, must be very small leak cause like I said just the small drops of green by the bolts. car runs awesome. thanks for advice and will do the test, although am thinking about just sealing the bolt and try it, could it hurt?

That's what I would try first.

Pressure test it...And make sure that its not an exhaust manifold/header bolt/stud leaking. Those ARE wet...

Yes just put sealant on all the bolts , that will tell you if the head bolt hole is damaged ... because it is not supposed to be in the coolant ... if it still leaks then it's either the head gasket or the head is cracked ...

Good luck

which head bolts are leaking, assuming there is more than one on one side?

just one, bottom row second in from rear on left side, did the pressure test - ran it at 18lbs took 20 min to squeeze one drop out, watched it come out right under the head bolt. going to pull the bolt and permatex it tomorrow and re test

What I have seen is after head milled ,block milled, is the head bolts either stock or even aftermarket tend to be to long, , then add in debris in the bolt hole and you have the makings of cracking the block thru the bolt hole.
It maybe a small crack now, But it will grow!
Temp fix,, is stud it and seal the stud,

Do you have studs or bolts holding on your exhaust manifold/header ?

I find it hard to believe 18psi pushing water out from under the head of a fastener that is torqued to what 75ft/lb ... steel against steel ?

studs holding on headers, had block and heads tested for cracks at build 2 years ago and all checked out good so I don't think its a crack, re-used head bolts so they should be correct length. they are torqued to 70 lbs could it be coming thru gasket some how? How much torque could I put on them?

Are the studs the originals or did you replace them ? I think it's coming from a stud , gravity is a funny thing.

But if you think it's coming out of that hole pull the bolt , if it's coming up that hole it will be full of antifreeze.

Rereading this , is it under the valve cover or under the exh. manifold ?

Its past tomorrow , did you pull the bolt and find coolant in the hole ? Put the pressure tester on without the bolt and look for the leak ?

well, coolant was definitely coming thru bolt hole on pressure test, sealed with permatex #2 just like the haynes manual says and leak is gone. not sure of the whys or why nots but

Good that you got the leak stopped.

Hopefully the bigger issue of WHY there is coolant coming up that hole doesn't get worse.

then there is the torque aspect, I don't know how the torque value of the bolt is changed by the use of permatex vs. oil.

But as long as your happy with the result I guess that is all that really matters :
