Hi all,
I wonder if the vacuum advance unit on my Mopar electric distributor (the one with the orange box) is bad.
Question: Is there any replacement on the market that has the same advance and is adjustable with the Allen wrench? Which one should I buy? Mopar doesn't seem to offer any parts, just the whole dist...
It is for a 440 engine.

Thanks
Jens

What's making you think it's bad? Borrow a vacuum pump & see if it will hold vacuum. All of em I've ever seen, the slope starting point is adjustable with the 3/32" allen wrench & you can solder strips of feeler gauge on the back side on the pod on either side of the notched arm to limit the arms' travel into the pod to limit the total if need be. Yes NAPA will have a selection & a can with 8 on the arm might be a good choice but one with more ain't a problem if you are willing to tune it with the strips.

Problem is I live in Germany. NAPA might not be a solution because of international shipping. I think the thread on my unit is bad, but the dist as such is ok. So I just need a replacement canister.
I found some Standard Motor Products, VC-187 and VC-188. But what are the differences and are they adjustable? Will they fit the Mopar electronic dist?

the 187 starts advancing at 10.5 in hg, the 188 at 8 in hg. both are adjustable & fit the electronic dists. App is 72-73 440 & 74-78 440 in HD 3/4T trucks on the 187 & the 188 is listed for 74-78 Newport 440 & 75-76 3/4T trucks which none of that tells you anything meaningful cause we need the total advance each can offers which will be stamped on the arm in dist degrees. Either would very likely do you fine. If you could find out which one gave the most advance I'd get that one then tune it when you get it up & running. A comprehensive shop manual that covered those years would have dist info, degrees etc but I wouln't sweat it but it would be nice to have a basis to choose from rather than just guessing. Maybe someone has some info on whether the early or later one would have more advance. EDIT I called SMP & the guy looked on his computer & no info

That's interesting info, thanks! I found on the SMP site that both cans have a "9L" stamped onto the arms, so advance is the same. Other than the vacuum where it starts to pull there doesn't seem to be a big difference.

Yeah I'm surprised that they both have the same total & that just the set tip in point is different especially since you do have a fair amount of adjustment there with the 3/32" allen wrench. Me I'd order both if I was overseas tho they do tend to be about as trouble free an item as you could ask for. Good luck with your project!

The german shop told me that the mounting bracket is different between VC-187 and 188. Is that possible?

Depends on application, some have a locating tab for the cap, some do not.Same for the plate, some have pin on arm, others on plate.

I thought it was not right that both would have the same total so I called my parts house & they have a VC-188 on hand & it is stamped 10L. They dont have a 187 on hand to physically check & he checked the SMP site & said no spec info was given.

Robert:

It is my understanding that you can shorten the slot with JB Weld and a paper clip, but that might be an urban legend.

Well I'll be damned if it ain't Jimmy G the JB weldmaster. I was wondering where you been & I had thought that likely the JB weld broke off of your dist slots & it then pinged & blew up & left you stranded in the Virginia backwoods somewhere & I'd never hear from you again. Please tell me you took my handmade AVS metering rod caps down from your wall of shame

That's what I saw also. But if you go to the SMP-site and search for VC-188 it clearly shows "9L". So with what I learned from this thread they (SMP) seem to show a generic picture that might not be exactly the part you are buying! So their catalog is of no help unless you need a replacement for an original Chrysler part and not the MP dist.

Shouldn't the max adv be 18 degrees?

Can anyone confirm that these replacement canisters are adjustable?
