My son called said the car wouldnt start, lights dim, etc. He said in the mileage window ??, it said fuse? I had him look at the fusible links, he said they were good, but in all honesty, he hasn't had the best training from me to know what he is looking at.

He got another battery, put it in, and starts right up, but I think he has an alternator issue not charging the battery. He is 400 miles away, so I cant help him, but i told him to take it to Autozone and have them check the alternator to see if it was charging.

Any hints??

Fuse will display when you have bad dome light bulb, so fuse doesn't necessarily mean fuse.

If the alternator isn't charging right, the battery light usually lights up. Sounds like the battery was bad or there may have been a bad connection. Let us know what the test reveals.

He said the dome light was fine and working. No lights on the dash indicating any issue.

Still waiting on him to go by auto zone for a check up. Might be later tonight when he gets off work.

Thanks for your help. Will let you know what he finds.

I did not mean that the dome light is the source of your trouble. What I was getting at was that fuse was used to indicate a number of different electrical issues. I have always wondered why they used the word fuse.

I guess why I posted was, didnt understand why it said fuse on the dash?? He had the timing belt replaced recently, that is why I thought a wire from the alternator may have been rubbing and was shorted out. I'm still not a 100% sure it is fixed by the battery, but will have to see.

He said everything was fine, although he didnt go by autozone to have it checked. I guess I'll know when something is wrong when he calls again.

Women or cars, you get the call....

I do appreciate your help, thanks.

After living with my Neon since 94, I have found that the battery cables start corroding where the terminals attach and you start loosing voltage, which affects everything. I finally had to replace the battery cables.

Well they don't really rot, they are copper, but corrosion builds up between the individual strands of wire and the terminal creating a resistance.

My '98 had that problem (rot, corrosion, whatever) on the negative cable. All kinds of funny symptoms. It had broken down to a couple strands of wire. A cable repair fixed it.

Go to the dealer and get the real thing, I looked at the parts store cables, their junk compared to factory. On my 95 there weren't many left so I did a search and found a dealer that was stuck with some and would discount it so they could get rid of it.

I believe there are 2 ground wires that could be disconnected when changing a timing belt. Getting the tension set on the alternator is also a bit of a pain with that threaded adjuster so maybe check for slack on the belt.

Thank you

I agree, my 95 Neon does the same thing. Every couple of months I have to clean off a big ole ball of white corrosion off of the terminals. I put grease on every thing & that seems to help slow it down alot but it still does it.

I just changed out all the cables on my '96 for similar reasons.
