A friend is being assigned overseas and asked what he should do or have done to his truck to prevent rust? I know some of you guys will have some insight.

Thanks

If your in New Mexico - I wouldn't worry about it. But ....... you're not giving enough information. New truck ? Old truck ? Bare metal ? Existing rust ? Access to cover/enclosure ?

What is he trying to protect? Body, frame, chassis, paint? You will get answers all over the board from POR, Rust Bullet, used motor oil, wheel bearing grease, epoxy primer. It's going to depend what we are preserving.

For Pennsylvania rust nothing beats a plain old oil undercoating, maybe followed by a trip down the dustiest dirt road you can find. But we rust out from the bottom up, salt air on an island might be a different set of headaches?

Salt air (beach living) is near unstoppable as we can get the right conditions and get a nice salt mist/fog drifting around for days - keep it enclosed as much as possible / fresh water wash downs / there are some sprays that may help undersides (as mentioned above "oil") Marine supply stores sell rust/moisture protection spray "films" that dry like cosmoline (waxy) - I use them on outboard engines and some suspension parts :

Having lived on Guam for two years I wouldn't bring a vehicle over.... The salt air causes rust in areas you'll never expect... Cars rust in the middle of panels from the inside out, roofs from inside the headliner out... From inside the cowl into the engine compartment..... I'm sure corrosion protection on modern cars is better than it was in the 60's-70's but FWIW I'd leave a good car in storage stateside & pick up a rusty island beater....
