We are in the process of putting the cage in the demon. It is a 8 point kit, nonchromoly.

My question is how large do the beads of weld have to be?

I emailed division 3, but havent heard anything yet.

Like a lot of other things in life it is not the size of the bead that counts , it is the weld pentration that counts Any body can gob weld onto a bad weld and it won't hold in a crash, so if in doubt, have it done by a competent welder

They don't dictate the weld criteria, good welding practices do.A good rule of thumb would be no more than the thickness of the material. If your using .125 to .135 thick tubing and your welding two tubes together try to maintain no more than 2X the thickness of the tube for the with of the weld.A 1/4+- bead would be sufficient. The amont of weld and heat effect zone should always be minimized to prevent elongation and structural changes in the parent metal.Spend a lot of time on fit,it's just as if not more important than the weld.NHRA rules only dictate that CM must be tig welded and MS can be mig welded. We preferr to tig since it forces the welder to make perfect fitting joints.

Tig that thing Scott. If you can't do it, get my nephew Mike over there to do it. He's an artist with a tig and he loves cash.

Bob George Racing installed a cage in my 65 and did a great job!!! I will always be thankful to Bob for the installation, due to the fact that it was an emergency situation in which NHRA failed my exhisting cage during a chassis certification.
The regional tech measured my cage on one of corners, where the steel stretches and he told us that the Jegster tubing was not thick enough.
Thanks to Bob we were able to make our next race the following week, we will always be greatful!!!!! HEMI JOE -- Endanger Species Racing

Also, go with CM. You will appreciate the weight and size savings.

Will you be tiging or miging it.... I normally have
each leg of the weld 1 material thickness when I tig
but with mig its larger with a nice radius at the center...
with either type dont under cut

I don't do much of any cages with mild steel. And don't do much wire welding on tubing anymore. But, something I would recommend if Mig welding it would be to leave a .065 gap between the tubes I was welding. This way you get more weld in the joint and not just a fat bead on top.

If you get someone to tig it you will want the joints as tight as possible as if you were going to super glue it together LOL.

The plan is to tig it. I just wasnt sure on how large of bead was required by NHRA.

I started tig welding in 1999, I started out by welding the impressions back into forging dies for the Chrysler Corporation. Basicly those were HIGH heat welds and didnt look like your roll of dimes type weld. I know I need to turn the heat down to get the dimes.

Thanks for the input

I would worry more about good welds than the roll of dimes. I have seen some very attractive welds broken.

I'm sure you can do a good job. Like others said at least the thickness of the tube no more than 1.5 times the tube thickness if you can help it.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I was under the impression that the NHRA techs do not measure corners where the steel stretched only on straights. Could this be a area where it depends on what tech you get?

Usually 6" from any radius or weld connection.

Here's a sample weld on my Coronet. 8 point welded in, not chro-mo. Never had any issues with tech at 'Da Grove here in WI.

Let us put it this way. Our tech "Pinky" who is no longer with us, failed the two cars before us and he failed our car, then he failed the two cars after us. It was quite apparent that he did not want to travel from the Columbus area to Thompson Raceway Park on that Saturday morning.
He also asked me how old I was and I told him that I was 56, then he told me if I planned on reaching the age of 57, that I needed to get my Mopar Performance frame connectors off the chassis of the car. Believe me their was no telling Pinky to move his tubing thickness guage to another location to measure thickness.
I tried telling him that my tubing kit was a Jegster Kit and he told me that didn't mean a thing, he said that doesn't mean that it was any good. I told him that I didn't believe that Jeg's would intentionally would sell a kit that was illegal. That's when he called for the next car! RIP - PINKY -- HEMI JOE -Endangered Species Racing --THANKS AGAIN -- BGR RACING
