The kickdown band (2nd) releases and the direct clutch applies during the 2-3 shift. It could be a shift timing problem, typically the kickdown band is out of adjustment; also, the sealing rings on the reaction shaft support may be leaking pressure. Does reverse work O.K.?

What valvebody? If automatic VB, the kickdown linkage could be out of adjustment.

I'd be dissembling the front clutch for a look see. Cut seals, worn reaction shaft rings, Kick down linkage. Get Carl Munroe's book and read it. Like Jim said in the other post, slow and easy. They're not that hard.
