What could be the cause of this? Too much advanced timing, too little retarded timing? It's a boosted motor with no signs of detonation.

Turbo or supercharged?

What kind of valve? Turbocharged really needs a good exh valve.

Based on your pic, it looks to be lean..?

It looks like a piece of the valve broke off, yes? Burnt usually is eaten away in a small spot, not a chunk missing I had the same thnig happen on my airplane motor, Lycoming O540-260 HP, it took a pie shape piece out of the valve at 2700 RPM at 8500 ft when leveling off and leaning the mixture to best power, it was a real eye opener It tore up the top of the piston and cylinder head How many hours or miles on the rest of the exhaust valves now? If not many maybe you got one bad one, if a lot maybe it is time to replace all of them to avoid future potential damges, I had two different exhaust valve heads on two different occasions break off in my 426 Stocker years ago,2 piston and heads had to be replaced

2 years ago my sons 10 second 360 lost a chunk of a valve like that. Took it home and put another BETTER valve in it and when we were turning the engine over by hand the engine stopped. The valve piece went from the drivers side bank to the passenger side. Pulled the head, took out the piece, and the engine still running today.

Actually the valve looked to be cut with a plasma cutter. It happened around the 1000' mark and if I would have not gotten out of it I'm sure the valve stem would have broke since it was almost cut in half.

Callico treated Ferrea valves. After 400 passes I couldn't see any sign of the Callico coating on either the intake or exhaust valves ??? so I replaced the exhaust valves with Ferrea Inconal @ $60 each. ouch

Pieces of the valve ended up in the #1 and goughed the piston. Another ended up in the #5 and damaged the head.

Those are new unfired sparkplugs that I installed during the compression and leak down testing. I also forgot to mention the electroids on the oriningal plugs were melted. My a/f's were in the 10's.

A couple of thing. First i read that the 90 deg elbow that your using is bad on air distribution. Also your intake is probably not helping.
That being said you would of seen this way before. I believe you have over 300 passes on this combo. Soooooo.
You said your A/F are in the 10s. Is this in the collector or primary pipes?
I/m thinking you should have your injector for that cylinder checked?

This^^^^^^^

Ran into the same problem on a 4.6 ford mod motor with sullivan intake and super low profile elbow. The elbow didn't give the air enough room to "straighten" back out and always leaned the rear cylinders waaaaayyyyy out. installed a 4 hole carb spacer under it and the problem was fixed. The spacer creates an dam if you will and helps better distribute the air.
