A co-worker called this afternoon with questions about his Intrepid. When the car has ran it sometimes will not crank over after running errands. If he or his wife leaves it sitting for about 20 minutes it will crank over and start right up. He had a new starter put on about a week ago, this did not help. He said he hears the fuel pump run and all lights are good but will not crank when engine is hot. Any help would be appreciated.

Clean the battery cables then swap the starter solenoid.

I told him about cables and jump start terminals. Wasn't sure about solenoid. Thank you.

That starter is a denso, built in solonoid, the back comes off, and there are 2 contacts in them, for a while they werent available back in the day, so I accually had great luck taking them, brazing them back up, cold filing them down and re installing them. the one in my Demon is a 93 version from an earlie magnum in a dakota, its been brazed for yeard on a 11 to 1 408, works great.

Ive also seen, being an 02 intrepid owner, the shifter mech get sloppy and causing it not to get into park all the was, I had to "adjust" the cable under the console to sure that problem.

My no crank issue was caused by a fault inside the trans - computer was reading the trans was not in Park & not allowing the car to crank. (blocking the relay signal ) Same exact symptoms: it would start fine sometimes and others i'd get a no crank, no click nothing. A telltale sign, there is a peculiar readout on the PRND21 display, I believe when I got the no crank, there would be a box displayed individually around each character. Eventually it progressively got worse until it would never crank. After much, much, much diagnosis and parts throwing, I bypassed the relay and installed a push button start on the dash. The push button start bypass worked until I had to replace the transmission two years later and was able to use the key to start after that. It has been a few years so the details are not fresh.
