Hello all. I found a factory 383 'Cuda and I've put most of my funds into getting the car, which is a roller, so I don't have the cash to get my 440 rebuilt right now. But I would like to drive the car and I've got a perfectly good 318. Would that involve installing a small block K frame and other things and be more trouble than it's worth? Thanks

If it's an E-Body, there is no need to change the K frame, just need

the appropriate motor mounts.

Radiator inlet/outlets are in a different location and bellhousing bolts are different between big & small block. If you use a 904 with the 318, the driveshaft will need to be longer & have a different slip spline than with a 727. Match the rear yoke size.

Take your time. Do the proper 383. You'll be happier and spend less in the long run.

Okay that doesn't sound too bad. I was expecting worse. The 318 is complete and running, that is the only reason I'd consider this option instead of just saving for a big block.
I also have one more question. The fender tag is long gone. The VIN and body stamps are there and match up. Would the missing fender tag bring down the value of the car? I don't think I'll be selling the car anyway, but it would be nice to know in case I ever get in a bind and need to sell. Thanks

At some point in the past I seem to recall that there was someone who could reproduce fender tags given the appropriate documentation of options (build sheet etc), but given the issues today of people trying to pass off clones as original I'm not sure this option is still out there. Hopefully someone else will chime in with more info. Here's a anyway.

A car with fender tag, broadcast sheet, and numbers matching engine and trans will always be worth more than one without one or more of those things. Sounds like you're already lacking the original engine and trans, so I wouldn't sweat the lack of a fender tag too much.

BTW, congrats on your purchase. Good luck with it.

Thank you. I've had a few 'Cuda projects in the past but they were so far gone I couldn't do much with them and ended up selling. This one will be much much easier to restore because of its minimal rust issues. And yes because the original drivetrain is gone and fender tag missing I just planned on skipping the 383 and making it a 440 'Cuda

then don't worry about the fender tag , if you don't have the broadcast sheet you have no way of making an accurate tag and it will be easily spotted as not being a factory original so it will not add any value to the car. Get a tag from a /6 volare and have some fun ....

Yeah no broadcast sheet either but I've never wanted a trailer queen anyway.. These cars are made to be driven! And yes a fender tag from a volare would be pretty funny, especially seeing people's expressions when they figure it out

not only is the bellhousing bolts different the bolt pattern is different...cant bolt a small block trans to a big block engine or vis a vie...find a running 383 shouldnt be to hard to do prob sell the 318 to pay for a chunk of it.

That's what I meant - the pattern.
