My dad has a 69 dart with a 69 440 motor, stock bottom end with new rings and bearings, 906 heads ported with the templates, 850 holley, M1, .557 purple shaft cam, TTi headers, 3500 stall converter and 4.88 gears and it runs awesome! Hasn't had it to the track yet, but he built the motor over 20 years ago and its definitely a torquey setup! Runs on 87 octane too!

ive also seen a few motor home engines with low compression like this one with mopar 509 cam, stock 915 heads,m1 intake 3000 stall 391 gears 28 tire etc do 11.90s in a duster not saying thats what im aiming for at all! but a low compression engine can make some decent power.
my 77 motorhome 440 stock bottom end 509, 915' milled.060 torker intake 850 speed demon carb, proparts headers,3000 stall 4.56 gear 28 inch tire duster @3560 with me in it went 11.94@112 was some where in the area of 413 hp rwhp.

curious how did they measure the power on the later 440's?whats bhp?if they dynoed it with out all the emissions and stuff on it put it on a dyno like the earlier 440's? how much hp would it have?this has always bother me because they say net hp.
Well new cars are all measured in net hp as well, so that really puts a 200hp late 70's 440 to shame. If you scrap all the emissions stuff, other than compression a smogger 440 is basically the same as a 71 440, which was the last year for the high cr stock pistons. If everything else was equal, and in brand new condition, I would guess you'd be 30-40hp off from the compression loss, when comparing t0 the 71 gross hp numbers. So the regular 350hp 440, would probably be more like 315hp with the smogger pistons.
The biggest drawback with using an old short block is ring seal. If that's poor, you won't make the power in the upper rpm that you should. But if you just need something to get running, sound good and dump in the car it should fit the bill nicely.

Here is a idea. If the motor is that good and really don't need to be rebuilt witch really could be.Lets leave the short block alone. Put a lumpy cam in it that is ground for a low compression motor. Now if this motor had few miles on it and was running and you saw it running. Just do a simple valve job and replace the valve seals. Put a good 4 barrel manifold on it either aluminum or steel and a new 650 or 750 holley. Then tell everyone that it makes 500 horse like all the rest of the people I talk to at shows and cruise ins.
this is what i did with my 77 MH 440 in the 88 truck.

I would say that through exhaust manifolds and duals that 300 hp, plus or minus 20 hp depending on how well you tune the motor. That is likely as good as it gets, for an older low compression 440. A cam change might net 5 to 15 more hp, but at a loss of tires shredding bottom end tq.
I have had more than my fair share of flogging old low compression 440 engines. Good heads, the right intake/carb(s), good headers, good ignition, and open exhaust with the right cam can net 430-450 hp with the right tune. BUT, that is $3000 plus worth of good parts that would make higher compression engines 500-600 hp.
Too many cars, too many parts, too little coin, too little space to work in, too little time left to make it all happen!
Update: down to one ride, still too many parts, a little more jingle in the pocket, gaining space, and it's going to happen this year!

i wonder how good the xe268 would sound in my 383?any one have videos of that?
There are videos on youtube of xe268 383's. I remember watching at least one from a member here. That cam sounded decent in a 383.

WELL THE SUMMIT 488 CAM IS FROM 2000 TO 5500 AND THE XE268 IS 1600 TO 5800 AND IT SHOULD NOT NEED A HIGER STALL IT STATES LARGEST CAM FOR STOCK CONVERTER AND I REALLY LIKE THE WAY IT SOUNDS,THE 383 IS PRETTY NASTY INSIDE IT DOES RUN GOOD THOUGH,GOOD OIL PRESSURE AND DOESNT GET HOTTER THAN 190 (SO FAR).IM STILL DEBATING IF I SHOULD REBUILD A 440 OR JUST ADD A FEW THINGS TO THE 383.ITS HARD BECAUSE THIS CAR WEIGHTS 5000LBS IM SURE AND EVEN IF IT HAD 500 HP IT PROBABLY WOULDNT BREAK 13'S LOL.AND FOR THE HUGHES WHIPLASH CAM I HAD ONE FOR THE 67 DART GT I SOLD AND NOW WISH I WOULDNT HAVE SOLD MY 440 SHORTBLOCK I BUILT .
Hell, with those smogger pistons, even a STOCK cam wants more converter stall! If you insist on using that smogger short block, DO NOT run a stock converter.
