Curious, which one holds up the best in a fairly heavy duty truck?
NV 4500? Getrag? 5600?
Was looking at doing a 5-speed conversion behind a 440 in an '85 1-ton years ago, so I haven't kept up with updates lately. Or trans technology. Anyone do the swap these days or just buy a newer truck?

The 4500 is leaps and bounds better shifting than the getrag. I've been told the 5600 is the best of the bunch.

I would never own an NV4500 truck again, stranded too many times with the 5th gear issue and the last two times the trans had the "fix". Also had bad luck with a G56 Mercedes 6-speed, so the only manual I would own is an NV5600 6-speed.


The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

The NV5600 and G56 6 speeds have the bellhousing integrated onto them making them only able to bolt up to a cummins or v-10. So they would be out of the question for a swap. A NV4500 would be your best choice. I think you would have no issues with one behind a 440.

The 5600 bellhousing is separate from the main case like the 4500.

No it is not like the NV4500. The bell on the 5600 contains the input and countershaft bearing races and cannot be separated from the main case without total trans diassembly.

Does the NV4500 have the 5th gear issue when used behind the V10 or just with the Cummins, or is it mostly driver related
