My new slicks, 28 X10.5 stiff side wall and new steel wheels should be in next week. Should I put screws in them? The car went 1.38 - 1.42 60' on radials depending on the air. No tubes.

Thanks

your going with still side walls so you will
be running less pressure in the tires... the higher
the pressure you run the less likelihood you would
need the screws.... pressure holds the tire to the rim

my junk, 2950 with me, 1.29 60', 32x14 stiff sidewall, no tubes, no screws, worked ok for me for the past 4 seasons. mark the tire valve & watch for slippage, first day out they move a bit but by the 3rd meeting they've stopped & you're good to go full abuse.

I had always run tubes & screws till I put my 1st Big engine in my dragster, nothing I could do would stop it from shaking the tires.I posted on every race site I could find asking for advice,a man up North told me on their dragster they had the same problem as mine. He said take the tubes & screws out and your problem will go away!I run 34.5x17-17 tires and I really did not want to try it,but it worked!
NO TUBES,NO SCREWS,= NO SHAKE!

I never worried about the slippage on the wheel(it
did some) but being I run 6 3/4 - 7 psi max it doesnt
like to hold real well to the rim... the first year
I build my car I got sideways off the line and it
pushed the sidewall off the rim.. trashed the tire
and rim... that was no tubes or screws... now that
I run tubes(better life of the tire) I screw them

No screws....... If you feel you need screws, then just go right to bead locks.......

You probably could have just taken the tubes out and had the same result, I can't believe screws alone would do that. All the screws are doing is making sure the bead doesn't come off the wheel.

Beadlocks=expensive

No beadlocks, too many $$$ for a car that's only raced six or eight times a year. That's why I went with steel wheels instead of another pair of Welds, that and the fact that I'm a cheapskate too .

Thanks guys

I have never run screws, all of my friends cars do not run screws,
But if you decide to run them make sure they are in the rims before you have them balanced,, if you balance them,,I have never balanced my rears

Do you guys running without screws use a trans brake, and what weight car? After having seen a tire slip years ago I never gave it a second thought, especially with the brake and three speed plus the weight.

What air pressure are you running?

The screws are there to prevent the tire from slipping on the wheel and ripping the valve stem apart.

Honestly I would have screws without tubes for peace of mind. One of those things if something happens at 135 mph, hard to say I should have done that, its too late. Cost you 25.00 or so, and a hours worth of your time.

I would and do. And from what I`ve been told screw placement, the amount of screws AND making sure they are the same on both sides can and does influence how they work.
