While I'll agree that there were two different rear upright wire loom bracket locations on 70-71 340 valve covers, they were not different for the application (340+6 vs 340+4) it was completely random as to which came on either engine.

I have no doubt that Troys examples came off of the respective cars he mentioned, however, keep the comments I posted in mind when making the call on what is correct or not, niether style was exclusive to 340+4 or 340+6 engines.

Here is one I removed from a May 1971 built 340 A-body (notice the original blue paint?)

These are marked "Supposedly" in this pic because they came on cars that had the opposite application, the forward postioned version was on an original AAR 340+6, and the rearward position example was on a 1970 340 Duster. both were unmolested original paint examples before I personally removed them.

Here's another weird one. Ever see a 70-71 340 (original orange engine) with a 3 wire tab valve cover instead of the large wire loom center tab? Here's one off of a 1970 340+4, original orange paint. In April/May of 1971 all 340+4 barrels went to this style when they started painting the engines blue.

That's early, any chance the covers were swapped? Do you have a pic of the block stamping under the drivers side head?

Trying to figure this..
The top valve cover is an original paint turquoise passenger side one with large wire loom.
The bottom is the later original paint orange passenger side with the loom.
Since the turquoise one does not have provision for oil fill and the orange one does, the turquoise early year engine fills oil on the drivers side instead of passenger side

understood that, should have stated that I was trying to figure out why Chrysler created so many different 340 valve covers and switched oil fill sides.
Just using passenger side for example there are no less than 3 different ones 68-71:
1968 passenger side was red with small tabs, no large wire loom, plug wire grommets on top, opposite side oil fill. 69 is turquoise with small tabs and large loom, opposite side oil fill. 70 and some 71's orange, with small tabs and large wire loom, oil filled side. Later 71's blue with small tabs minus the large loom and I have seen several passenger orange like last one Scott posted less the loom, both oil filled side.
I think 73's are different again with the longer small tabs.

Changing emissions regulations and engine venting were the main reasons. The looms changed to help protect engine harnesses and plug wires from the various exhaust, intake manifold, and heat cross over choke designs.

Terry, here's an original pair of 69 340 valve covers, original turquoise paint with some orange over spray from them being used to cover an engine that was being painted orange.
