I've read conflicting info on this, and would like to get the straight poop from someone who's done it! I read that you need a "special" flexplate and a 3/16 spacer to mate a smallblock trans to this engine. I recently read that a mopar flex plate and no spacer would work if you cut the mounting lugs on the convertor .070". If that is true, could I just run a .090" midplate and call it good? Would this combo allow me to use an off the shelf convertor with stock starter location?(no spacers or adapters)

Thanks..That's the kind of answer I was looking for

Now..on to the next question: since I plan on running a mid-plate, can I run .090" steel without any converter mods? or should I run a 3/16 aluminum plate and have the converter built accordingly?

Since your playing with a 727 I have no problems
running a .090 mid plate with the normal conv nose..
if you go above .090 (like .125 I would suggest that
you have the nose lengthened).... unless for some
odd reason they have the flex farther into the back
of the G3 block... but the trans is still in the same
place as my R3 so you should be fine

If you run the mopar flexplate without a midplate with a normal small block converter, the converter will almost touch the flexplate when its all the way engaged. If you run it that way, good luck. Cut the lugs down .070 (I believe it was me who told you that) and it'll be perfect or run a .090 midplate and you'll be fine. Mike

I'm in this camp. I made a spacer. the lugs on the converter touched my flex plate and I didn't like it so I made a spacer for mine. At the time I couldn't get a good answer on this and I did what I felt I needed to do

on another note, I bought my flex plate from Mancini for like $69, when a friend of mine ordered his, Mancini talked him into a flex plate that cost twice as much, why? I don't know.

maybe the offset on the cheap one I got isn't right requiring a spacer
