The FAST racers are, I would like to on my demon but all that power drop off just sickens me. I'm sure there are tricks like coated head pipes, x pipes, polished exh ports etc...

all I can add is they are 2&1/4 outlets & the dr one is somewhat restricted. I'd want better for 408 cubes but as you know headers are much more difficult to deal with

I have a 416 stroker with factory 1970 340 exhaust manifolds - extrude honed.

Cam specs:

Cam: Hughes HE3844AL for high torque
Lobe separation: 108
Installed centerline: 106
Intake Exhaust
-----------------------------
Cam Lift 0.357 0.360
Valve Lift w/1.5:1 0.535 0.540
w/1.6:1 0.571 0.576
Valve Lash Settings .000" .000"
Duration Advertised 286 290
@0.50" 237 244
Cam timing @ 0.50"
Opens: 13 BTC 53 BBC
Closes: 44 ABC 11 ATC

515 ft lbs of torque at 5,300 RPM. I think it runs good.

My stroked 71 340 is 426 cubes, 9.5:1 pump gas engine, stock TQ carb, intake, and exhaust manifolds (extrude honed).

Nitrided Hyd. Cam
Gross Lift Intake .551 Exhaust .542

Installed @ 114 Intake Centerline

Duration @ .050
Intake 242 Exhaust 253
Lobe Lift .3560 .3500
Lobe Sepperation 114.0

So far 450 HP/500TQ without any time to tweak it, probably 20-30HP left in it and a bit of torque as well, likely a fair amount more with some carb and intake work. Sounds and looks basically stock with a little grumpier idle.

Was the Extrude Honing worth the money? I know it ain't cheap.

It all depends of what your hopes and goals are. So far dyno testing has shown I paid 750.00 for roughly 3-5HP. Every little bit helps so you make the call

The problem with my engine is not the exhaust, the cork is the intake at this point, there may well be some more HP available from the manifolds once I open up the intake etc.. Tough to say until the exhaust becomes the biggest restriction.

Why do you think it's the intake that's the restriction? That pass exhaust manifold on a 71 is what 2" at the outlet. Just courious.

I went searching for this too. I found a little bit, but don't get your hopes up to high. Your numbers are about right for these "stock" appearing set ups.

Are any of you F.A.S.T. or stock appearing guys running hydraulic roller cams in stroked small blocks with the 340 HP Exhaust manifolds? If so, whose cam and specs?

right but there are more than a few that look stock running much higher CR, and much bigger solid rollers, with tricked out carbs and intakes, many of those engines are well over 500hp

Yes they are. Here is what I ended up with.

A hydraulic cam has no business being in a race engine.

Most shelf type cams are totally wrong for a engine running exhaust manifolds. There are several things to consider with manifolds, and what you " think should work", probably is way off base. They have " special needs", just like most of us.

I agree 100% . Get in touch with somebody that builds and tests several engines and has a good idea of what it takes.
Most cam companies tech lines get it wrong too.

For as much as it is discussed on this forum, it amazes me how many believe that the problem is the exhaust. "You can lead a horse to water......"
