I am thinking of installing a 6.1 into a 70 Barracuda. How hard are they to get running correctly once installed. I am not worried about the installation process, but I don't have much experience in the tunning process. Once installed and the computer is programed should she run strong. Should I take the car to a shop with some experience and tell them to get it running after I get the motor installed.

I am in the process of doing the 6.1 in an Abody. Not running yet. Street and Performance (as well as others Im sure) can reprogram a factory computer. Or you can go with a FAST or AEM system. Dave Weber at Modern Muscle can get an AEM system real close before he ships it to ya. Then taking it to a tuner would be the next step.

FYI, using the AlterKtion or similar front suspension makes the 6.1 swap much easier than a factory Kframe.

Do you want to stay EFI or go carb? If you want to stay efi, MP makes a programmable engine management system or you could go with one of the aftermarkets.

I can tell you they run fine. Stock efi is fine. I did my own harness, and do not have street & performance do the flash. Two years ago they did nothing "in house," Call Dave at B&G Chrysler in Michigan, he does a decent job. I recently got 24 mpg with a 6.1 cam in a 5.7 hemi, with a tko600. Drivability and reliability is awesome. Have been on three 700 mile round trips, and no troubles. I would be glad to help anyone that needs it. As far as the programmable stuff, I do not think it is needed until maybe up to 500 hp. A bought harness is around 950$ from HotWire and 450$ or so for the computer and a flash (I think). Its awesome inmy opinion, it would only be better with a stroked efi 6.1.

Good luck

Justin

Considering that a 5.7 in a 4500 lb car will turn high 13's stock, it won't take much to get a 3500lb old mope flying.

We have our base heads and cam cars running mid 12's on big 20+" wheels nothing more than shorty headers, a cold air intake and a mediocre tuning system.

I put a 6.1 in my 69 Dart. It has a Franks Racing Tomahawk cam, B & G flash, 3.91 gear, and 4spd. Runs like a raped ape.

right now, the problem i have is my tune is a "box" or canned tune. they have no programmer for tuning the truck computers, which is what alot of the swap guys must run, as far as I know. what i am saying is this combo is not being optimized in my car right now. anyone else know?

I love Frank Racing...

Oh wait, I work for them...

I'd really like to hear more about the combo.

wouldnt that be with a tune? what are typical gains with a tune. i know it depends on a tune, but even with his 6.1 I believe we are both running 04 ram manual trans controllers, which has no programmers out yet?
