My A&A drum is 6+ years old has over 900 passes and many street miles, still looks brand new.

Had my aluminum drum for 8 years to many runs to count. This past year i replaced the brass bushing in it. It was showing some ring wear.

While the drum might last a long time, our fluid goes to crap after about 30 runs, so I don't know how long you should go between fluid changes in a street driven car.

That sounds about right (~600 passes). The ring surface wear depends on the type of rings used (teflon, stainless, cast, etc.) and the valve body line pressure.

The outer surface doesn't seem to wear excessively if you change the trans fluid regularly. But for any significant street driving, I would recommend an aftermarket steel drum rather than an aluminum one.

I have an aluminum drum that is 10 years old, it's still fine, as recomended when it was installed I changed fluid every 50 runs. Drum still looks fine. Band adjustments and checks just let you know if you have wear IMHO anyway, you can check all you want, I used to check mine all the time, finally decided to quit doing that, I check it every spring now. When I bought mine I wasnt even aware they had a steel drum, mine is all strip, if I was buying one that saw some street time though, I'd go with steel, safe and would have to be more depenable on the street I'd think. I averaged about 350 runs a year for the first 6 or 7 years I had mine, just 50 or so the last 2 or 3 years.

i prefer steel. i change my fluid every two years, and that's probably a waste. i could sell it as slightly used. a mixture of street and track time. mostly street anymore (my helmet expired).

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?
