Driving my '64Dog to work this morning, nothing seeme3d wrong until I tried to straighten out the parking job, first the wheel was hard to turn then it turns free!
Boy am I blessed to have it happen in a parking lot and not going downhill at 45mph!

when i was 16 yrs old I learned why you dont "JUST" hammer a alum steering wheel adaptor on with out the shaft nut to hold it down.

took out a phonebooth on a corner at 25mph when it came off in my hands from turning a power steer car with no pump hooked up.

it was ok..it was a pontiac.

now, where do you find a steer box for a 64Dog???

That would stain the underwear!

Are you sure you didn't just kill a rag joint? Never heard of a steering box just break, what broke on it? Pictures of the breakage would be neat to see. Gene

I was hoping it was the rag joint but that's intact. Spin the wheel, shaft going into the steering box turns freely. I think I broke off a gear tooth.

When I get it replaced I'll try to remember to post a picture or two.

Thanks, but...The box is securely mounted, the Pitman arm is still attached, and the rag joint is also. When I turn the wheel, it just spins around and around and around. The shaft going into the box is turning, but the output shaft isn't.

It's a recirculating ball box. It's a Saginaw 525, which is very popular in the aftermarket. So parts shouldn't be that hard to find, but I've got to get it off first, and it isn't at the house!

Sounds about right...they NEVER break at the house.

Well, at least it picked the 2nd best place to break, instead of rolling down the highway at 60 mph. Gene

I am blessed, that's for sure. I came down the hill at 45, right angle turn halfway down, nothing but rocks and ravines to my right. I can imagine rolling and rolling over that extremely rough terrain, can't imagine surviving.
It broke right where I park for work.

I got the box off today, it appears that the upper bearing on the steering gear side came apart and I'm hoping a $40 bearing and seal kit will fix it. I'll take it more apart at home tonight and get everything cleaned and examined, then wait for the Post Office to bring in the parts I need.

The steering box on my dad's 71 did the same thing several years ago. Luckily I was driving it slowly(25 mph) through a curvy section of country road when it let go. I almost filled my shorts, but i managed to stop before I went in the ditch. I replaced the box with another I had laying around.

I am now waiting for the kit to arrive, the bad bearing was the culprit. Nothing else broken as far as I can see.

What color should I paint the box?
