Hey guys, I'm ready to replace my 727. It's in a 67 Coronet, 511 stroker 440-1 heads Ultimate 9"TC,etc. I just want to purchase a complete replacement, this is really just a street car.I know an aluminum drum is out, no transbrake either. Any opinions on where to purchase and what to buy?

I agree with Cope trannys's. If you are going to buy a trans and not build your own then buy from a reliable company that builds good race tranny's and Cope does build good tranny's. Ron

It would be a LOT cheaper to go through your present tranny if the core is good. You could have it rebuilt with an aftermarket steel or aluminum drum for less than $1500? If you need a lot of replacement parts, you are still way ahead of 3150.

On your deal I would look at using a Mopar brand 2.77 low gear set and a steel drum I'm sure Cope can do that for you, I live west of the big muddy so I use Dave Smith at Pro Trans for all of my 727 tranny builds I can do them myself but he has all the little parts needed (thrust washers, snap rings and so on) to set the end play up correctly inside the tranny and a ton more knowledge on torqueflytes than I do so he gets my tranny work

I rebuilt mine and in the end I din't save very much money. Related thread:

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...page=0&vc=1

The ProRaceII is a full rollerized trans, with billet drums, gear, servo, new manual reverse VB, even a deep pan, plus a bunch more, and then there are associated assembly parts not even listed like the different thickness drum to pump bushings, selectable thickness output shaft snap ring, setting the clutch packs with selectable clutch retainer rings and/or different thickness kolene steels. If you price all the parts out you don't save a whole lot.

If you phone John Cope he will give you a good recommendation on which of his transmissions fits your application best.

But, IMO, that ProRace II is more than you need for a street car. I am thinking the regular ProRace with the steel front drum upgrade would do the trick, $1,595+$535= $2,130. That saves you the expense of the roller bearing modifications.

There are always up grades that some one could do to the 727 trans,, but the basic standard trans rebuild will work just fine!
Attention to details when rebuilding is the key when it goes back together.
There are several of us who have race cars, run deep into the 9 with just standard rebuilds, with small upgrades bolt in sprags,, and rear roller bearings which is both cheap to do!
As stated , you can spend a lot , and get the same performance out of a stock unit.

"this is really just a street car."
I really don't think you need the full race transmission.
As stated a simple rebuild with a few selected modifications would do the trick for your application. That is unless you are into overkill and don't mind spending the money!

FWIW.. We just use a standard 727 built with a Turbo Action "Tranz Box" rebuild kit.Works great,no problems.

Nautilus Racing-
We use Superformance gaskets and Turbo Action converters/products.

I dont use Cope tranny's either but thats because I build my own. But many people on here use them and I hear nothing but good about their work. As many have said for a mild street car you dont need a race trans so I would just tell them what you plan to use your car as and let them build what they think you need. I use stock Mopar clutches in my tranny's and my brother does also. Even when he was running high 8's in his Cuda we still used Mopar clutches and never had a failure. We have both been Mopar dealer techs for over 20 years so we have a nice stock of Mopar 727 clutches and steels. Ron

I do understand where you guys are coming from, but i don't think a 800HP 3500lb B-body is a MILD Street Car. I'm looking for something that could last for some duration.

See Sig. I stripped down the 727 in the Challenger last year. After 4 seasons (70ish passes a year) it was hardly worn, the front clutch pack was 9 thou looser than when rebuilt (I kept notes). Still within the limits, it didn't need a rebuild but did it anyway since it was apart.
It's built with stuff from CRT, the usual ware, Kolenes, reds, billet servo's, steel front 5 pinion planetary, bolt in sprag, Griner LBA MVB, oiling mods etc.
Speak to John, he'll keep you right, they're easy enough to build yourself too.
HTH's
OH and a billet steel front drum.

Get the 727 hand book Cope helped write it.
I used it and all the parts from cope to build a nice street strip trans.
Cope rebuild kit red alto clutches and koleen steels.
billet servos
tf2 or manual valve body
4.2 lever with heavy duty strut
red lined bands
steel planetary
pump modifications done at home per the hand book.
6000 Rpm Governor if using auto shift .
put the the money into the parts and build yourself 727 easy to do.
this is what i did and then there is my friend has a bone stock trans
behind a blown 440 with just a manual valve body for 200 bucks and the trans has held up with street and strip driving so far 10 plus years.
a good trans to start with is key .

When I built my trans I planned to use the billet front drum and ultimate sprag. The unexpected expense was the billet front gear. When I pulled the trans apart, several if the gear splines fell out. This was just from pushing a 4,150# Charger into the high 11's.

A&A Transmission
Can't go wrong with the leading "manufacturer" of aftermarket transmission parts.

Doesn't CRT buy most of the parts they sell from A&A?

Find a local builder thru your car club or racers in the area. I used to build my own until a guy pointed out to me some things I didn't do correctly. He has built my last 2 and the most I have spent is $1600.
